Would it be wise to put it straight on the carpet, or should I put something underneath it? Like a piece of cardboard, etc

Well all I've got right now is cardboard. Would that hold up, and for how long?

Go pick up 4 8x8x16 CMU's and get it off the floor. Elevate kneeling down to open the door.

Put something with a cupped edge, like those fancy floormats. One day the electricity will be shut down and the tiny freezer in them will leak a lot of water. Unfortunately, you will not be home when this happens.

Plastic sheet. You'll get rust stains on the carpet.

THIS

I had this exact scenario happen to me while I lived in college. You don't realize how much ice accumulates on that freezer until the power goes out and your carpet soaks it all up. Cost me a fortune to clean up.

It should be fine to put it straight on carpet. In fact, mine is sitting on carpet right next to my space heater as we speak.

Had mine on carpet for a full year with no problem. But, now that I think about it if the power had gone off, I would've been screwed.
