How many of you with Vanguard mutual funds also have a linked brokerage account? Thinking about opening one

I do. I have only deposited a stock certificate in there so far, but no actual trading. I like how it fits into the normal account view I'm used to.

It's really easy to open one. I had a question about having the MM fund as the sweep acct, since I didn't want to commit the 3K to open it. Turns out you can open it and leave it at zero until you put cash into buy or receive cash from a sale. I just called Vangyard and they took care of everything Over the phone in about 5 min.

Brokerage account is good for conservative (traditional) investing. Especially if you have a large enough account to get fees down low or free. You're probably better off somewhere else if you want to do complex options trading.

I opened one when I opened up my Vanguard account. I haven't transferred anything to it yet. I didn't realize they did a free dividend reinvestment program. All of my stocks are currently in my scottrade account, but I don't really like how the dividend reinvestment works at scottrade (FRIP = Flexible Reinvestment Program).

The main thing that I noticed about Vanguard's brokerage account is the commisions/fees. The first 25 trades only cost you $7, but they are $20 after that (for anyone that has less that $50k in Vanguard funds).

ditto. Cash in the brokerage account earns zero while a MM pays at least 0.5%. So there's that.

I have both with Vanguard. I highly recommend both. With the brokerage account, it is easy to buy and sell stocks on line and the fees are very low. They also provide good research resources. If I knew 20 years ago what I know now, I would have all my investments with Vanguard.

I've had one a long time. I like everything except that you have to call in orders for small thin stocks like acazf. I like their bond and cd offerings as well.

I've only had one for a year, my 16k did not earn me but like 62 cents. I think I'm doing something wrong?

You must have it in the money market or something else that earns approx. zero interest.

It's not the brokerage account itself that's slow growing, it's what you hold inside the brokerage account. You can buy anything inside the account, from ultra conservative MM funds to index funds to risky individual stocks.

I have a Vanguard brokerage account, 401K, and IRA. I love them.

And, it's definitely about what you hold inside the brokerage account. My rate of return YTD is 12% and 14% since inception in my brokerage.
