Got a little drunk at DU banquet and bought the .308 Howa with a Nikko Stirling scope. What are y'all's thoughts on this caliber and setup for deer?

Probably the most versatile short action rounds there is. More bullets for it than probably any other round. Will curb stomp any deer alive.

Compare the ballistics between the .308 and .30-06.

They're basically identical.

An AWESOME round for deer, hogs anything you would shoot with a rifle in our area. I have even taken a cow elk with one.

308 is great for what the op wants, but it is not even close to identical to the 06.

Yeah, 308 Win is an excellent all purpose cartridge but doesn't have the absolute versatility .30-06 does. They overlap in the most common 150 - 175gr loads but the extra case capacity of .30-06 is a big advantage.

If it's the green one with silver scope, nice setup.

308 is the preferred cartridge for Moose in Newfoundland. Mainly because of its relatively new-to-them availability and its strength over a 30-30.

With that being said, it is a more than capable deer round.

Had a Nikko Stirling scope on my slug gun. I enjoyed those optics.

Nice deer round with very well published ballistics thanks to its military roots. It will drop considerably more than an 06 loaded with lighter weight bullets. The low recoil is also a plus.

I bought a Remington 700 .308 for my son last year (he is about to be 9 years old). He shoots Hornady Lites out of it and has killed deer with no problem. Since he hunts with me, we only carry the .308 to the woods now. I have shot a 7 mag for 20 years. I actually like the 308 better for the type of hunting a do now (most shots are 200 yards and under - used to hunt a lot of ag fields where 400 yard shots are not uncommon).

It is a fantastic round.

I did the exact same thing the other night. I haven't shot it yet.

As mentioned already by many, the 308 Win is a FINE deer hunting round. In addition, the Howa bolt action rifle is a good gun that's highly underestimated.

My brother just bought a Browning.308 X-Bolt with a Trijicon scope. Probably the sweetest set up I've seen.
