Bought an XPS in 2009 with a 3 year accidental/full warranty ($1,500+).

In those 3 years, I had 3 motherboard failures (CPU and GPU related) and replacements. 2 months after the warranty expired, the board fried again and now the thing is a paperweight in my office until I decide to replace it and recover the data off my HDD.

Bought the wife an XPS in 2010 for her grad school with the same warranty. 2 board failures/replacements.

Bought my mom and brother Dell comps through my credit account; same results.

You can see the trend here. Won't buy another Dell, period.

Don't know about Sony's failure rate, but Dell is a guaran-damn-tee.

I went to high school with the "dude you're getting a dell" kid, I decided on the vaio because with the big screen, I can ditch the dual monitor setup and the windows 8 snaps split excel sheets into perfect alignment next to each other...I have two excel programs open at all times and I need that all day with specs, skus, vendor lists, purchase orders, etc.

thanks, that was very helpful. I had already decided, but I was only at 90%, that post was the extra 10%

plus I really fricking hated that kid

Not a problem.

I used to sell Sony Viaos (2007) and they were very solid machines, but overpriced for what you got. If they're still competing in the market today, I'd imagine they've stepped their game up.

Oh, and obligatory "sorry for Windows 8".

And frick the dell dude.

What are you going to be using one of those for? A desktop or a mobile-ish PC?

more desktop, but sometimes I'll need to bring it with me traveling...I definitely will move it around the office.

occasionally bring it home with me...I'm not worried about the mobility in terms of size and weight. The ability to be able to pick it up, put in a bag and go is appealing, so I don't care if it's big, so long as it's easy to move

I'm not a tech guy, but I've had the XPS 18 for almost a year. I use it at home and bought it for portability from garage to house, and room to room. It is perfect for that, and I'm glad I chose it over a laptop. I have the charging stand in the garage where I mainly use it, and and extra charger (no stand) in the house. I definitely prefer to use it on the stand. I occasionally use it as a tablet. I haven't had any problems with it other than having to replace a wireless keyboard. I got the high spec model like new for dirt cheap off of ebay. No idea how it compares to the Sony.
