When doing ab workouts on weighted machines, should you gradually go up on weight like you would any other exercise or should you stay at a light weight if you wanted to tone and tighten your core?

In other words, will adding weight make your abs look more bulky?

And don't respond with the bullshite lines like, "abs are made in the kitchen..."

I know it's about what you eat.

Heavy weight low reps will make them larger, which can make them show more. But overall body fat determines how toned you are. Body weight crunches and sit-ups will only grow them so much.

I'd suggest working up to heavy weight sit-ups and weighted ab wheel along with diet and cardio

Add too much weight to your ab routine and they'll start sticking out too much

I don't have much body fat in the belly area. Just want to shred and tone up. Should I stay with light weight, high reps?

Switch it up and do both. But abs can grow and get larger just like any other muscle, so if they start getting too bulky then obviously cut back on the heavy weight.

You should do both

You probably would never do either enough to make it a "problem"

Like if I challenged you to try to make your abs disgustingly bulky, because you are not a professional body builder you would fail

Pssst....that's an example of palumboism in that photo, which results from excessive HGH usage. No one's likely to get blown-out abs like that naturally no matter the amount of weighted exercises.

Never done machine for abs... I've seen good results doing roman chairs with a light plate.

Sounds like you do have body fat in the belly area. If you want to see abs, you need to cut body fat. Do some hiit to try to cut. Stop worrying so much about crunches and ab machines. Get your core strong with real lifts and then get your fat down.

Then follow that. You need to eat cleaner.

You can find good ab exercises online that can give you variety; do leg raises with a pullup bar.

Good luck.
