Hello All,

I'm moving soon to Florida where I will be working in Tampa and living in Orlando. I will be actually working on-site twice a week. And my commute is actually 140 miles roundtrip (so 56 miles a day).

I've never owned a car before because leasing made sense to me in NYC. But I'm thinking I might not be taking the most reasonable option financially-wise this time. The typical mileage allowance in leases is 12k annually and the max I have seen so far is 15k. I'll probably be using 13440 of that just for my commute, so I'm left with only 130 miles per month for non-work trips.

I'm not sure if 15k will be enough for me and not sure what other options I have aside from leasing? Has anyone been in similar situation?

Thanks!

Yea, leasing when you have a lot of driving to do is generally not your best bet, imo.

Why not buy or move closer to work?

I've never seen a max.

When i leased, there was just an additional (upfront) cost for every additional 2500 miles I wanted to add per year.

Leasing can be a good move in certain situations, but probably not yours.

You can buy a car...

Are you on your own for the commuting costs, or will your employer be paying to you make the commute?

The 15K may be a max without additional charges, but you can usually prepay additional mileage. But if you are doing a lot of that, you have to see if it makes financial sense.

I'd buy...and consider a TDI, like a Passat or Golf. 55 mpg hwy, in real world driving conditions. If your employer reimburses for mileage, you can make it work to your advantage. If you are USAA eligible, the loan rates are cheap and paperwork is minimal.

You can prepay mileage over the additional 15k/yr at a reduced rate than at the end. Depending on residual, if you will only be 2-3k over, it may not make a difference.

Lots of times actually. Mainly if you ARE going to get a new car every 2-4 years, for whatever reason. Lease residuals and money factors can be very attractive vs financing.
