Anyone shoot 270 short factory loads? I've never owned a short mag until recently and am looking for a good bullet to start it with

Man...
Go buy a few different boxes... Different weights, bullet types and shoot it. See which one groups better and that's the one you shoot. Don't shoot a ballistic tip/partition just b/c your buddy does.... Even if it's the same rifle.

I shoot a .300wsm and use 150 grain Barnes TTSX. These rounds are ridiculously accurate out of my Tikka. On my friends .270 wsm Sako, he sgoots 130 grain Barnes TTSX. They are pricey but worth it imo. Also, they are ballistic tips, aim for the neck.

ive shot the barnes also and are very good, but as said pricey! Ballistic tips will leave the deer laying, but can ruin alot of meat if the shot isnt placed well. It looks like gel when you open them up but no trailing deer

I would tell you to get a butt stock pad. I also had a muzzle break put on mine hardly any recoil at all now.

I have had the 270WSM since it came out. I find that the ballistic tips to have inconsistent results. It could be shoot placement, but some deer had huge gaping holes and others just an average entry and exit.
I used to buy the Winchester 140gr Powerpoint when Winchester was the only company making 270WSM. Then other companies started making 270WSM ammo. Now I use either 140gr Federal Fusion or Remington Core Lokt.

1+

In addition, I'd suggest a controlled expansion type bullet (Nosler Partition, Nosler Acccu Bond, etc.), NOT a lightly constructed bullet (like the Nosler Ballistic Tip). Your velocity should be 200-300 fps more than the regular 270 Win. Given the extra velocity, a bullet like the NBT will be prone to expanding too much/too early and not penetrating well.

Federal 140g Nosler Accubond - they are getting harder to find, I have 2 boxes left than I will probably have to switch.

I shoot the 270 WSM Fusion loads, found they group the best out of my Vanguard. Started with the Federal NP - could never get the bullets to shoot worth a damn. Fusion have knocked down several the last few years. Though no more than my brothers regular .270 ...

I shoot Remington CoreLokts out of my Tikka 270wsm. It's groups better than i can, and i've always had good luck with the corelokts exiting.

I've just seen too many deer lost with Ballistic tips, because the blood ran out due to no exit. They scare the crap out of me.

The performance of the Nosler Ballistic Tip (NBT) bullet on game is highly dependent on velocity. While all bullets are affected to some degree by velocity, but the NBT's are even more so. One reads on the internet of a lot of "failures" of the NBT w/ inadequeate penetration resulting in minimal to little blood trail. From reading the 'net, it seems as if the incidence of this goes up as the muzzle velocity approaches 3000 fps. I shot the 140 NBT in my 270 Win rifle for many years and was very pleased, but the mv was 2900 fps. In the handguns I now hunt w/, the NBT is pretty much the gold standard deer hunting bullet; but the mv is 200-400 fps less than in a comparable rifle. I wouldn't shoot a NBT in any of the short mags (or regular mags) in a rifle.
