I will be traveling to Europe for a few weeks and I'm looking to take either a tablet or laptop with me. I'm looking for something that is relatively cheap. I want something with a USB port so that I can load pictures from my camera and email them. I will be on the go a lot, so portability is key. 10-12" should work fine. I have looked at Chromebooks (hp11) and 2-in-1 windows notebooks like the Asus Transformer book T100 and the acer aspire switch 10.

any opinions either way?

Venue Pro 8 + OTG adapter will give you full size usb in 8" tablet form for the $180-220 range, depending on where you're looking. A microSD can expand the storage considerably. Con here is no keyboard (but it's got Bluetooth and can connect to and Bluetooth keyboard).

Transformer book is a great option, too, albeit a little more expensive. Once you accessorize the above, if you go with a refurbished t100, you could easily spend the same.

I much prefer windows 8 to chromeOS, so my bias is away from the chrome book. Many people disagree, and for your purposes, you'll get a bigger product with a bigger screen, which could be a potential plus or minus for you.

No experience or knowledge of the switch 10.

I own an 11" 2013 Samsung Chromebook 2GB/16GB and it will definitely meet your needs.

I picked up an Asus T100 a month or so ago and love it. Full size usb 3.0 port, microSD slot, MiniHDMI port, microUSB port. Comes with full keyboard, Microsoft office and full windows 8.1. Can't say anything bad about it. Incredible battery life too - I can work on it all day for 8+ hrs and still have 20% battery left.

I got the 64gb version with the fastest processor still NIB from someone on craigslist for $300. If you're patient, you can find great deals.

Awesome. I'm not going for a few more months, so I have time. I just don't want to take my macbook pro or iPad to Europe. The iPad is actually not capable of what I want it to do. I would also be pretty pissed if I broke or lost either of those devices.

The Chromebook is almost at a disposable price. If someone steals it, I wouldn't be too upset.

Hows the keyboard on that ASUS? I have not had a windows device, besides my work computer, which I hate, in about 7 years. How's 8.1??

It's a little cramped (understandably so on a 10" device) but it feels solid and has great response. It actually feels like a real keyboard, not like an afterthought or accessory to the device.

8.1 is great. It helps to have the two modes for the two different uses of the T100. When I use it as a laptop, the normal mode is just like Windows 7 and very familiar. When I detach the keyboard and use it as a tablet, the mobile version of 8.1 comes in very handy. The available apps are somewhat lacking, but if you really want a program, most are available to use in the full on windows version.
