Why is Alaska's Senate race still being counted?

Yes, I get it. They are remote and that likely can delay vote counting for several hours. But it today's age of internet, faxes, scanners and smartphones, why hasn't the tally moved off of 73% in almost 48 hours? It's not 1840. Anyone have any insight on this?

I asked my golfing partner who lived in Alaska about that yesterday. He said it's a bunch of friggin' BS.

Lead sled dog from the Fairbanks poll got rickets.

The sled dogs can only carry the official ballots so fast.

Disputed votes and remote voting sites. I think around 140 sites still hand count, those then have to be verified I believe. It can take weeks.

They're busy trying to manufacture votes for Begich before it's too late.

Votes that were mailed in and time stamped before the election have two weeks to be received and counted.

Internet, smartphones, etc, require a supporting infrastructure.
I'm not sure you realize just how vast Alaska is.

I saw a report on TV Tuesday night that the far away igloo precincts have to add them up by hand then either dogsled them in or water airplane them in to several central areas where they fly the ballots in by water based pontoon airplanes to the capital and another city in the Northern area. All of that takes time until later in November. I agree with the above rant that with todays technology, the system could be improved. There's got to be a better faster modern way to report results.

Most of the outstanding absentee and early votes won't be counted until next week. There's 24,000 of them, plus another potential 13,804 absentee ballots still possible under the mailing deadline rules (2 weeks after Election Day), and another number of disputed ballots (that number should be known by tonight - but in 2010 it was about 13,000).
Sullivan leads by about 8,000 votes so is likely going to win, but Begich trailed by 3,000 votes the day after the 2008 election, and then won by 4,000 votes when all the outstandings were counted, which is why he's holding out on conceding. The bad news for him is that the uncounted votes were twice as many that year. It's the governor's race that really hangs in the balance with the uncounted votes, with Walker (the Independent) only leading Parnell (the Republican) by 3,000 in that one.
All races will be certified on November 28th.

There's a reason why it's a small state population wise. A huge majority of land in Alaska is basically uninhabitable and not safe to live in.

This is the interesting one IMO. Mallott is on Walkers Ticket and he's a Dem, fairly liberal and he's also a native. Walker struck gold combining his and Mallott's campaign. Walker was a mainstream Republican. Interesting twist in the race this year.

Alaska is different for the Dems in that you have to chop through ice to get to the votes of the dead people!

The truck carrying the thousands of stamped absentee ballots from DNC HQ is running full speed to the panhandle. Alaska is just a Hugh-Jazz state.
Give them a day or two.

They'll be pissed when the road ends and they realize they can't get them here...

Uh oh.
Hope they can find carrier Pigeons or a UPS store nearby. They weren't prepared. You can't fax these in Alaska like you can in Illinois.
