I am really new to craft beers and know there are some very knowledgeable posters here whose opinions I respect. I have found a place here with a really good variety of taps for filling growlers. The place is called the Beer Growler and is a chain here in Ga. Here is their current tap list minus ciders. I will probably fill two or three 64oz growlers.

1. Anchor : Porter San Francisco, CA 5.6% Porter
Anchor uses 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process to make this deep black porter with a the thick, creamy head and rich flavor.

2. Founders : Breakfast Stout Grand Rapids, MI 8.3% Imperial Stout
Brewed with flaked oats, bitter and sweetened imported chocolates, Sumatra and Kona coffee.

3. Southern Tier : Choklat Lakewood, NY 10% Imperial Stout
Belgian bitter-sweet chocolate is combined with dark malts to make this rich chocolate stout. Chocolate, dark cherries, lightly woody and bittersweet

4. Goose Island : Bourbon County Barleywine Chicago, Illinois 12.1% Barleywine
Aged in the third-use barrels that were once home to Kentucky bourbon and then their renowned Bourbon County Stout.

5. Stone : Coffee Milk Stout Escondido, CA 4.2% Milk Stout
Made bittwersweet and creamy while remaining smooth and easy-drinking thanks to the addition of milk sugar.

6. New Holland : Dragon's Milk Holland, MI 10% Imperial Stout - Barrel Aged (Bourbon)
Roasty malt character intermingled with deep vanilla tones, all dancing in an oak bath.

7. Off Line : Off Line

8. Aviator : Devils Triple Fuquay Varina, NC 9.2% Tripel
notes of yeast, and sweetness from belgian candy sugar

9. Ommegang : Hop House Cooperstown, NY 6% Belgian Pale Ale
Hop House combines the delicious aromas and flavors of a Belgian-style ale with generous hopping, including dry-hopping. A well-balanced, yet ample, hop character defines this fine pale ale.

10. Monday Night : Gun Show Atlanta, GA 8% Belgian Strong Ale
This spicy Belgian-style strong ale has been infused with pears and the residual sugars are reminiscent of fresh honey.

11. Victory : Golden Monkey Downingtown, PA 9.5% Tripel
Rich German malts and fruity Belgian yeast combine to make a light bodied herbal and fruity Belgian Golden style ale.

12. Three Taverns : Single Intent Decatur, GA 5% Abbey Single

13. Boulder : fRYEd Boulder, CO 6% Fresh Hop Rye Ale - Hops (Chinook)
Our 2014 hop harvest special release, fRYEd Fresh-Hopped Rye Pale Ale, will be fresh-hopped with Chinooks from the Still Wind Hop Farm on Colorado’s Western Slope imparting tropical fruit notes to its flavor and aroma. Generous amounts of toasted rye add complexity with a spicy, nutty flavor.

14. Southbound : Hop'Lin Savannah 6.5% IPA
A smooth, medium bodied American with intense citrus/pine aroma and taste accompanied by a slight hint of caramel.

15. Red Hare : Equinox Marietta , GA 7.6% Fresh Hop Ale w/ Equinox hops

17. Brooklyn : Summer Ale New York 5% Pale Ale
A sessionable and refreshing "anytime" beer.

18. Chattanooga : Hill City IPA Chattanooga, TN 6% American IPA
Caramel malt and barley notes contrast with the mix of west coast hops, resulting in an aggressive, but well balanced, beer.

19. Red Hare : Cottontail Pale Ale Marietta , GA 5.5% American Pale Ale
Hopped with Zythos hops giving it a light citrusy flavor and aroma. Balanced by a sweet malty backbone, the perfect companion for the warmer weather.

Would probably be my choices in no particular order. I'd want to get that goose island bourbon county BW for sure.

If I was filling 2 growlers, I'd pick a stout and an IPA. I'd go with the Founders Breakfast Stout and the Ballast Point Big Eye.

A lot of folks talk up Orpheus. I've had a few of their brews and don't get the hype. The ATL people praise their Atalanta brew likes its the second coming and its kinda meh...

I'd avoid that Red Hare Cottontail brew as it sucks.

No real standouts to me. I would steer clear of paying growler fill prices for beers you can buy in 12oz cans or bottles.

This is what I really wanted to try but I called and it is 17.99 for a 32 oz growler.

I really, really like stouts but I really want to branch out and try more styles. I say this everytime I pick up beer but I keep getting stouts.

I do enjoy the ipa's I have tried and like tripels a lot also.

Orpheus has had notable consistency issues to the point that they wrote a big email on this list I am on. Regardless Atalanta is not my fav of theirs.

Sykophantes is much better.

I'd probably go with these 2 as well. As tempting as the Bourbon County Barleywine is, that's just too much of that beer. I've had it a few times, and it's great, but even 12 ounces is more than enough. 32 would just get to be too much.

I am going to call around and see if I can find it by the bottle.

I agree with these 2 also. If I filled a growler of BC Barleywine, I'd definitely share it.

Of this list I have tried is the Founders Breakfast stout, Southern Tier Choklat, Red Brick A town brown, Oskar Blues Old Chub, Moon River Apparition and Wild River.

I really like the Breakfast Stout and Choklat. Old Chub was pretty good as well.

I'll tell you my suggestions based on the ones i've had, after that it's up to you to pick between those.

2. Founders : Breakfast Stout Grand Rapids, MI 8.3% Imperial Stout
Brewed with flaked oats, bitter and sweetened imported chocolates, Sumatra and Kona coffee.

quote:

16. Ballast Point : Big Eye San Diego, CA 7% IPA - Hops (Columbus & Centennial)

There is a lot there that i've never had, but i've had all of these, minus the founder's Dark Pennance, and their great. Founder's gets a nod because all of their beers that i've had have been great.

But if i was filling 2/3 growlers i'd get Founder's breakfast stout, Ballast Point Big Eye, and Founder's Dark Penance.

Some bars also allow tasters, so you can try some of them that way. If you explain to them that you are new to the craft scene, i'm sure they'd oblige.

ETA: Throw hop hash in there as well.

4. Goose Island : Bourbon County Barleywine
21. Founders : Dark Penance
29. Moon River : Tenzing's Gose

I think I'd go for those three... I know the GI is a lot, but it's damn good, and I love barleywines.

It will be great. You gonna try and make the FBD tailgate? It is in the same spot as the one we went to last year for the TA&M game.
