Deer hunter survives bear attack

We're going to an alpine lake on Admiralty next Sunday to hunt. Biggest fear is this, having a brown bear come after your kill.

A 65-year-old deer hunter was injured and needed a medevac after he was attacked by a sow bear on Sally Island Tuesday afternoon.
quote:
Sixty-eight-year-old Sitka resident Michael Snowden suffered injuries to his legs. His hunting partner, Jeff Ostrin, age 38, of Camas, Washington, was not injured.
Initial reports indicated it may have been a group, or a “sloth,” of bears, but according to Kodiak Fish and Game biologist Nate Svoboda it was a sow bear with two older cubs involved in the attack.
“They were carrying the deer out, actually dragging the deer out down to the beach to be picked up,” Svoboda said. “And the stopped to take a quick break for lunch and at that point they heard a bear rustling in the brush. They reached over, grabbed their rifles and moments later a bear charged through the brush and jumped on the survivor and continued to thrash around with him. The witness, obviously startled, backed up a few feet, took aim at the bear and waited until he had a clear shot.”
At that point one of the cubs came out of the brush and was also shot by Ostrin.

I'd need a fresh set of pants.

Yeah, it's a good idea to clear the beach as quick as possible. I'm pretty sure that would be my last deer hunt of the season if that happened to me.

Defentiley carry a 9 mm as a side weapon.
The modern advancements in bullet technology makes this an excellent choice.

They're saying it was possibly 5 bears now involved in attack
That was what was first reported and if so, would be incredible since brown bears are so territorial. Could be two sows with cubs were drawn to the carcass.

This is where the Glock 20 would have come in handy. 15 rounds of 220 grain 10mm can make a bear change it's mind

I carry 440gr .500 S&W with me on islands where bears are plentiful, my partner who's going with me has a .44 mag. w/305gr WFN ammo. We keep a 12ga w/slugs in camp and I shoot a .338 wm.
Problem is the coastal forest is extremely thick and if one decides to jump you, shooting first isn't always an option. Never go alone in brown bear country.

serious question, can he keep the bears he shot? I mean they weren't taken while hunting bear, but it aint like he hit them with his car. How do they handle that/

Hide and skull must be salvaged and turned over to authorities. I know a guy who shot one in self defense, didn't salvage, reported it and still got a summons.

It's the biggest fear, outside of getting weathered in. The island we're going to has 1,600 square miles and an estimated 1,800 brown bears. Russians named it "fear island" when they first saw it.

That is crazy. Would love to go somewhere like that some day just to see what it would be like. Looking over your shoulder every step of the way.

Yep. Some of the bears on Admiralty are over 1,000 lbs. Don't want to take any chances.

The ABC Islands of Southeast Alaska (Admiralty, Baranof, Chichagof) have the densest bear population in the world. They are literally like wildlife safaris when salmon are running. Admiralty is really close to Juneau, but you gotta fly or float in. We're flying to a lake that has a forest service cabin. Hopefully flying out too, depending on the weather.
There are some nice documentaries on the islands.
