Yes. I know this won't end well. But let's see what we can get out of this.

So the Premier League looked like arse in the Champions League today. This has been a pretty common trend since Chelsea won it all (while struggling in the Premier League).

The argument for the Premier League is always that it's more competitive top to bottom, but is that simply because the top teams aren't nearly as good as the top teams in other leagues (Bundesliga and La Liga specifically)? It seems that way to me. I love the Barclays Premier League for the history, as well as the physicality, but I don't think I can argue it is the best league.

Judging by Champions League performances, I think Serie A and Ligue 1 want into the conversation. There top teams are clearly better than the top Premier League teams, so it is no wonder that they are difficult to beat. Juventus and PSG would destroy in the Premier League in my opinion.

Oh, almost forgot. The Scottish Premiership Premier League whatever the frick you want to call it sucks balls.

Juventus and PSG aren't better than Chelsea. La Liga and Bundesliga teams are better at the moment. It is all cyclical.

bundesliga is so good that a team in the relegation zone is in the round of 16 already

I agree with your overarching theme about the Prem being down but wtf are you talking about with Serie A and Ligue 1?

Juventus is behind Olympiakos right now and Roma has the same amount of points as Moscow and has gotten butt thumped twice.

EPL will still get 3 into the knockout round and possibly 4 if City can get its head out of its arse.

Suspensions are going to crush City, even if Bayern plays a B team.

Only Chelsea and Arsenal will go through. Pool and City are done.

Like last year, CL-wise the B-liga is making a pretty strong showing.

Bayern & Dortmund are moving on, Leverkusen is in great shape....though Schalke is being Schalke

Expected more out of Pool and Citeh by this point...BPL still has the top players, but the whole isn't as good as the sum of its parts

To be fair, City beat Bayern in Munich last season with their B team. Yaya has been such a liability. I wouldn't be surprised if they play better without him. They're really missing David Silva though. They've look completely lost without him.

I added that to spice things up.

It wasn't in the original post and I don't actually believe it.

All Pool have to do is win in Basel. Hardly an impossible task.

So are we willing to admit that La Liga and Bundesliga are better than the Premier League, and the reason they are top heavy is because they have unbelievable teams at the top. I think the Premier League would be top heavy if it had a couple of Bayern, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Athletico Madrid.

maybe Liverpool as the third. City is done.

Basel already beat them once. And Pool can't score goals.

Except, you know, how Celtic beat Astra at home while my OL (sitting in third at the moment in Ligue 1) got beaten at home by Astra (and got put out by them).

I have no doubts Bundesliga and La Liga are better than EPL right now. Arsenal have been shite this year and are still in the hunt in the EPL. City are very vulnerable.

There's a reason the last two CL finals have been all Germany and then all Spain.

I'll concede the quality argument for obvious reasons but I still think it's the most entertaining.

The EPL is certainly a bit overrated in some people's minds due to the aggressive foreign marketing and the very vocal segment that only watch EPL and repeat the drivel of the English media pundits.

It's frustrating as a fan of a team from another league living the US to watch the EPL increasingly tighten its stranglehold on TV exposure to the point that it's become difficult to have a conversation about anything non-EPL unless maybe it's Messi or CR7.

Even in CL matches like City-Roma you hear the pundits going on and on about City missing a single player when Roma is playing without its entire starting defense, GK and best 2 midfielders with nary a mention (I'm sure that they don't even know).

Or, Juventus last year or Dortmund a couple years ago doing poorly in the small sample size of CL group play becomes fodder for EPL pundits to point to "how weak their leagues are" when at the same time there has to be some other reason when EPL champion City does even worse.
It's hard to find a voice in the crowd saying that Juve and Dortmund had trouble, like City, adjusting tactics that work well domestically to the different types of matches clubs play against them in CL.

The list could go on and on.

However, the poor impression the EPL is making in CL recently is due more to the top sides all being slightly down and probably only Chelsea being able to compete with the few elite sides right now. This is cyclical and clubs like Arsenal, Man U, City, Liverpool are much more likely than many other clubs they are even with or behind at the moment to come up a notch or two in the near future.

I also certainly don't think that PSG or Juve would waltz through the EPL however the EPL cheerleaders that would say those clubs with their obvious quality and also deep rosters couldn't win it are just as deluded.

That the EPL is so strong top to bottom compared to the other top leagues is a myth that is usually supported only by someone reciting transfer budgets and payrolls when those clubs must spend more than their mid to lower table counterparts in Spain, Germany and Italy because they don't have the same level/quantity of domestic talent (not to mention the huge influx of younger South American and Eastern European talent).

I'd bet money one of City or Pool gets out of its group but yea the EPL has been terrible in Europe so far.
