Released in September 1974. Easily Newman's best album, Imho, his Pièce de résistance. It listens as a virtual history lesson, misanthropic and tender at the same time, an comical indictment of Southern backwardness. All these great characters coming in and out of these songs, all this dark comedy, and early 20th century Southern imagery.

1. "Rednecks"
2. "Birmingham"
3. "Marie"
4. "Mr. President (Have Pity on the Working Man)"
5. "Guilty"
6. "Louisiana 1927"
7. "Every Man a King"
8. "Kingfish"
9. "Naked Man"
10. "Wedding in Cherokee County"
11. "Back on My Feet Again"
12. "Rollin'"

Cherokee
quote:

Her papa was a midget, her mama was a whore
Her granddad was a newsboy 'til he was eighty-four
What a slimy old bastard he was
Man don't you think I know she hates me
Man don't you think I know that she's no good
If she knew how she'd unfaithful to me
I think she'd kill me if she could
Maybe she's crazy I don't know
But maybe that's why I love her so

KINGFISH
quote:

A hundred-thousand Frenchmen in New Orleans
In New Orleans there are Frenchmen everywhere
But your house could fall down, baby could drown
Wouldn't none of those Frenchmen care

Everybody gather 'round
Loosen up your suspenders, hunker down on the ground
I'm a cracker, you are too
Don't take good care of you

Who built the highway Baton Rouge?
Who put up the hospital, built you schools?
Who looked after shite-kickers like you?
Kingfish do

I anticipated this response and I'm not going to argue because I love em both. I give Good Old Boys the nod because it was the first I'd heard, it was like nothing I had ever heard, and it blew me away. I discovered Van Morrison (astral weeks, Moondance) at like the exact same moment in time at LSU, so it was a great time for me.

on his ACL show from a few years ago, someone yelled out "Rednecks", he kind of chuckled and replies along the lines of "I don't think I can do that one anymore"

No.

Trouble in Paradise is also a great one: I Love L.A., Christmas in Capetown, I'm Different (and don't care who knows it).

Being of rural heritage, I sang loudly when "Rednecks" played at the bars and taverns down Highland Road in the 70's. It wasn't till a few years later, upon listening to the lyrics, that I realized Newman was dissing me/ us ..

Newman was mocking rednecks in general and pointing out the hypocrisy of our fellow citizens in the north. Great song. I played the song for a friend of mine from Chicago. He thought it was funny until the end.

Today we will be married
And all the freaks that she knows will be there
And all the people from the village will be there
To congratulate us
I will carry her across the threshold
I will make dim the light
I will attempt to spend my love within her
Though I will try with all my might
She will laugh at my mighty sword
She will laugh at my mighty sword
Why must everybody laugh at my mighty sword?
