Why do grocery store pharmacists have an attitude?

I've noticed this consistently where pharmacies are located within grocery stores. It's like they all hate their jobs and want you to know that they're too good to stand behind a retail counter. Just so you don't mistake them for cashiers.

Retail pharmacists in general see about a jillion more customers than hospitalists. I think that's a certified stat.

More reason to have a customer service mindset.

Spend all that time in school just to tell people to eat before they take their pills

You would be angry too

They just hate the general public because 40% of them want narcotics

Pour pills from a big bottle into a little bottle.

Now, do it 100 times a day.

They don't have an ownership stake. They get paid regardless. It's easy to replace a surly 16 year old. A trained pharmacist, not so much.

Answer the phone 50x a day for people asking if you have Norco or Oxycontin in stock and get into arguments with 20 other people wondering why you won't refill their Soma 15 days early and youll find out. frick I hate retail pharmacy

He's likely meaning that because of that, they are constantly dealing with people asking stupid questions or people getting impatient with them because the prescription they dropped off isn't filled in 5 minutes. If I was a pharmacist I think I would rather work in a hospital than a retail setting.

I have worked both retail and hospital when I was a pharmacist. Retail just sucks. Things may have gotten better since hydrocodone went C2.

for what they make all day every day

Be able to count to 100 and read drug interactions off a printout - not taxing for what they are paid.

in general i've been told that the grocery store and walgreens pharmacists are the pharm graduates who were at the lower end of their graduating class.

the smart ones end up as clinical pharmacists in hopsitals and doing research.

I really don't know how retail pharmacists do it. You have to be smart and go to pharmacy school only to get out and stand behind a counter all day. I know they make good money, but I would go insane!

Course in the hospital you gotta deal with us nurses calling and bitching when our meds aren't up for our patients

(but at least most hospitals make us bitch at the pharm techs first)

If you want to know the day in the life of a pharmacist. Read this guy's blog, especially the older posts.

He's actually 100% correct. The pharmacists who couldnt get a residency do retail and thats all they can do. Hard to get a clinical job without a residency now.

Retail may pay more but its not worth the headache.

I get that the job is mundane but then that's the career. Grocery store cashiers who work 20 feet away have harder and crappier jobs but are trained to greet the customers.

They give me the dmv feeling like they're holding a power over me.
