Forgive me, I am a longtime Android (rooted) user that recently converted to an iPhone 6 Plus.

I'm interested in turning my iPhone into a Hotspot and have learned (or so I think) that Sprint won't allow me to do this unless I pay for a Hotspot.

Before I go down the jailbreak avenue, are there any other alternatives that will allow me to activate Hotspot on my phone without having to shell out any more money every month to Sprint?

Pangu

Be careful, its still new. Last time the Chinese released one, they had some bugs and spyware in it. May want to wait a bit.

ETA: PDAnet for your hotspot. Not sure if its ios 8 certified yet though.

Are you sure this is 100% true, and it wasn't just initial wariness based on the fact that it came with an evil piracy app by default, or the general distrust of the Chinese when it comes to cyber security?

EDIT: Also, yes, the only option is to Jailbreak if you want to use your data however you want rather than pay for a separate tethering plan.

There is a debate, however, among the community if carriers can track them. The safest way is to use a VPN with the app like PDAnet or MyWi. If the carrier discovers you are tethering for free, they will just charge your bill the fee.

Carriers can, in fact, track where your incoming data is going, if its feeding a 3rd party device. I tethered my rooted android to my car so my passengers could have wifi. ATT realized it before my billing cycle was even over and slapped a tethering plan on my plan without my consent. I argued my way out of it but was told that was my only freebie.

I've since left AT&T and tried to do the same with my Tmobile unlimited data on a rooted android (and my wife's jailbroken iphone), Tmobile didn't add a tethering plan but my tethering speeds got throttled into the toilet. When I contacted them about it, they acknowledged that they could see I was using data for hotspots and it was within their right, per my contract, to throttle my hotspot data.

I'm with Sprint and have an unlimited data plan. Sprint doesn't throttle, correct? I can't imagine their data being any slower than what it is, without restrictions - but that's for another story.

I'm not sure, but I believe sprint and tmobile don't throttle mobile data, but will throttle hotspot data if you use one without a high speed hotspot plan or go over your data limit for your hotspot (hotspot data is not part of the unlimited data plans for either carrier).

Tmobile didn't throttle my actual data, only my hotspot data. I got unlimited tethering from them still, but at 4g, not LTE speed, even if I use apps, hacks and tricks to fake my way into hotspot mode. They still know where the data is going.

I know following the uproar, Pangu pulled the intial release, rereleased it with English documentation and yanked the "spyware" piece that was in it.

As for tracking, its pretty simple. What are you downloading and how much of it? Look at it like this, the second you tether a Windows laptop yet leave Windows update enabled, you'll be polling Microsoft's update site. What in the world would your Iphone need with that otherwise? If you repeatedly download gig's of data that aren't coming from streaming sites or otherwise sites available or usable on a phone, it becomes obvious.

I've tethered mine with PDAnet since ios 4, its been great and I've never received a threat about it. However, I use it sparingly, not as a replacement for my regular Fiber ISP.

Agreed, Jailbreaking on an iphone is the only solution unless you specifically enable the hotspot, which will trigger a change to your account (including the dissolution of an "unlimited" account).

I've used MyWi on jailbroken devices for years and never had AT&T say anything to me.
I just used Pangu last night and tethered a bit. Haven't tried any other tweaks or apps yet. I'm always nervous when a jailbreak is this new and comes out this fast.

I wasn't jailbroken for one night when I had to restart my phone and it just boot looped. So no jailbreak for me now. Anybody else have any luck? I have the iPhone 6. I would like to jailbreak but it's just so sketch anymore it seems.

i am jailbroken on 8.1 and use tetherme bc i have an ATT unlimited plan. i emailed back and forth with the developer before i downloaded and he said that the best thing to was use a VPN as stated above. when i told him that i would likely only be ththering my wifi-only ipad, he said that the difference in data usage between an ipad and an iphone was probably not significant enough to raise an eyebrow at ATT. all that being said, i have only used it a few times and for it was just for a few minutes each time
