Remember when LSU could get a delay of game penalty for crowd noise?

A buddy of mine who was at the OM game said the crowd was louder than loud and obviously got to OM at times. We started talking about the old days in TS when the crowd was into it and very loud, and the opposing QB would try to call the snap, back out, signal to an official and basically claim it was "too loud" to call the snap. The crowd was then verbally warned that LSU would receive a 5 yd delay of game penalty if it happened again. Of course, the crowd cranked it up. Can you imagine today if that was still the case? Don't remember when they finally stopped that, but it was definitely a goofy penalty.

It was definitely in the 70s/80s. I moved away late 80s and can't remember specifics....

I'm not call BS, but I don't ever remember this happening....not at Tiger Stadium or anywhere for that matter. Whats the point of home field if that were ever the case?
Canyon how old are you and what are you "old days in TS?"
ETA - just looking for a reference period on when this might have happened? It hasn't been since the 80's to now that I know of.

Probably, I was going to ask the same thing.
I was at that Saints game. It just got louder each time.

There was such a rule back in the day in both college and pro football.
I don't know when it was taken out.

I've heard of it happening at LSU. My parents tell a very similar story.

There actually was such a rule, but I don't remember it ever being enforced.

I wish I would have taken a play or two to just look around and soak it all in. That place was rocking that night. Can't wait to be back for the Bama game.

If that rule was in effect now LSU would have been flagged multiple times last Saturday night.

It was, rarely. Usually they would just stop the play clock and let the offense huddle up again, though.

I guess it's illegal for everyone in the stadium to crank up their phones with music blaring all while screaming... artificial noise makers?
Posted on 10/31/14 at 3:14 pm to LSUfan4444
No, I remember those too. No, definitely TS. Man, it's been a while...

no prob man....I'm 55. Attended games with my dad mid 60s until I moved. No link, but I SWEAR it happened. And you are right, home field advantage suffered.

Boy, most of you are way too young for me. This happened routinely when I was at LSU from 1978 - 1985 (yes, 4 years of undergrad and 3 years of law school). The QB was sometimes allowed extra time if his players couldn't hear his snap count. It was really funny and happened all of the time in Tiger stadium. I started going to games in 1967 and I know that it happened until at least the early 90's.
I know the NCAA had a rule as late as 1993 that stated the penalty on the home team for excessive crowd noise was:
First offense they stop the game
2nd offense they stop the game and do a PA announcement
3rd offense they charge the home team with a timeout
Every offense after that its a 5 yd penalty.
Watch some of the 1970 - 1980 ESPN Classic football replays and you will see this happen.
A quick internet search states that the original crowd noise rule was eliminated by the NCAA prior to the 2006 season.
From the 2005 NCAA Rule Book:
Rule 9, Section 2, Article 1, Part (b)-5
5. Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any noise that prohibits a team from hearing its signals (Rule 1-1-6).
PENALTY—Dead-ball foul. 15 yards [S7, S27] from the succeeding spot. Flagrant offenders, if players or substitutes, shall be
disqualified [S47].

It happened a couple of times for the Ohio State game in 87. One of my first memories of a football game.

This. I was a junior and was at that game. The refs finally told Tupa (the Ohio State QB) to just snap the damn ball.

I think may have actually occurred in the mid to late 1980's when we played either Notre Dame or Ohio State at home.

I was at that game! and the ref was kinda funny, basically kept pointing to the ball like, snap the damn thing!
