Kershaw because he has the considerably bigger contract.

Bum will be a WS legend and talked about for the next 50+ years...I'd take that and his 3 rings in a heartbeat

But but but the giants are stupid for letting him pitch!! Can't wait to listen to the herd this morning.

Kershaw’s 5+ ERA is a bit misleading. The only reason it is that high is because Mattingly didn’t trust his bullpen at all and left a tiring Kershaw in way too long.

I know right. I'm sure bumgarner would completely self destruct if bochy ever over pitched him.

This Kershaw can’t pitch in the post-season narrative is getting ridiculous

He's made it through the 7th inning exactly once in 8 postseason starts.

if I had a must-win game 7 and I could pick anyone in the league to start it (assuming everyone is healthy and fresh), Kershaw would be my choice.

Bumgarner has undoubtedly been better than Kershaw in the postseason thus far, but I don’t really believe that is predictive of the future. Too small of a sample size. Kershaw is the best pitcher in baseball, so I’d want him on the line over anyone else. Same reason I’d want Mike Trout in the playoffs (1-12 this year) over Pablo Sandoval

Remember when ARod struggled his first few Yankees postseasons. The narrative was that he was a choke artist and he couldn’t win in the postseason. Instead of realizing it was a tiny sample and he was the best player alive, nearly everyone bought into that. Then in the 2009 postseason he threw up a .365/.500/.808 slash line, won the postseason MVP award and led the Yankees to a title.

Thought it might be interesting to include their postseason numbers and compare overall. Bumgarner creeps a little closer.....I feel like offense has been steadily declining for a bit, though, so Bumgarner being a younger guy has thrown a higher % of innings in a lower-offensive era than Kershaw.

Kershaw threw 21 games in 2008 (Bumgarner 0), 30 games in 2009 (Bumgarner 1), and 32 games in 2010 (Bumgarner 18).

But Bumgarner has thrown 37 more playoff innings than Kershaw, so that should be weighted a bit higher

Bumgarner 74-52, 162 GS, 1040 IP, 2.99 ERA, 8 CG, 5 SHO
Kershaw 99-54, 217 GS, 1429 IP, 2.56 ERA, 17 CG, 9 SHO

Given the fact that an mlb starting pitcher has much more effect on the outcome of a game than a QB

If you're the ace, you get to pitch one maybe two games in a series (usually).

You could pitch perfect games in all of your appearances and never get to the World Series. Your comparison is stupid.

Bumgarner because he's on track to be a 1st ballot HOFer

Eh, Kershaw has a better shot at being a 1st ballot HOF than Bumgarner. For Comparison:

quote:

Bumgarner

Regular season: 151 games 67-49 3.06 ERA
Postseason: 14 games 8-3 2.14 ERA 3 world series championships -- 0.26 ERA in 36 World Series innings. 3 World Series championships 1 WS MVP

Curt Schilling

Regular season: 216-146, 3.46 ERA, 22 Saves
Postseason: 11-2, 2.23 ERA, 3 WS championships, 1 MVP

Pretty comparable numbers, with Schilling having a much larger sample size. And he's going into his third year on the ballot. Sure Bumgarner has out of this world WS specific stats, but 3 Cy Youngs outweigh 3 rings in the HOF discussion.

That said, it depends on personality which career you'd rather have. As a starting pitcher, there's a good deal of self-centeredness involved so the individual accolades are great. But at the end of the day, it's a team sport. For me, I don't think I'd care that I never won a Cy Young if I had a World Series ring.
