I've done it the opposite way many times. Stay on the main street, stop by the daiquiri shop on the corner. Probably best to cab it if by yourself late at night though.

Its safe. I do that walk weekly. Stay on St. Claude and take Elysian Fields to Royal. Take Royal to Frenchman. Less than 10 mins.
