FTC sues AT&T for throttling it's unlimited data customers

The Federal Trade Commission filed a federal court complaint against AT&T Mobility, LLC, charging that the company has misled millions of its smartphone customers by charging them for “unlimited” data plans while reducing their data speeds, in some cases by nearly 90 percent.
The FTC’s complaint alleges that the company failed to adequately disclose to its customers on unlimited data plans that, if they reach a certain amount of data use in a given billing cycle, AT&T reduces – or “throttles” – their data speeds to the point that many common mobile phone applications – like web browsing, GPS navigation and watching streaming video – become difficult or nearly impossible to use.

AT&T promised its customers ‘unlimited’ data, and in many instances, it has failed to deliver on that promise,” said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. “The issue here is simple: ‘unlimited’ means unlimited.

This is just a dog and pony show. Nothing will come of it. I'm actually changing plans and getting away from the unlimited plan because of the throttling. With all of their data, there is no guarantee of speed.

I don't even come close to the 5GB throttling point, so I often ask myself why I haven't switched to something like Straight Talk.

One of the guys at work just about had an aneurysm talking to AT&T about the throttling.
The At&T Rep just kept reading the script that to ensure he had the best service possible, his phone would be throttled at 5GB.
He said for him the best service possible would be for him to receive unlimited Data as promised.
Script.
Script.
Script.

I went through the same thing with them. I think this FTC thing is a way for them to solidify throttling people. It is just a ruse.

Sounds reasonable. Get sued, hear a judge say you can throttle customers, celebrate victory by cutting throttle threshold in half to 2.5GB.

Off topic: Not to get too personal but I see you are in Central. I lived there from 6th to 12th grade, graduated in 1996. It has changed a lot since then.

I've only recently moved here and it has changed a lot. The Quarters is nice and the Thruway/Sullivan is very nice. Whatever that area is with Stab's is nice as well.

I don't have unlimited but I never go past 4GB anyway.

I think the suit is legitimate but I doubt anything comes of it.
AT&T will at worst pay a small fine and promise to be better with future advertisements.
It doesn't matter since they no longer offer an unlimited plan.

They used to throttle me at 2GB when I was on unlimited, saying I was in the top 5% of usage in the areas (obvious bs). They would throttle me down to 0.5 Mbps. Told them to go to hell and I've been with Verizon for 2 years with speeds averaging 35-50 Mbps (well faster than my cable internet at home).
I hope it turns into a class action and I can get some of my damn money back for that crap service.

I don't go over there often except for a haircut, but I remember years ago when the developer of that neighborhood behind stabs was showing the plans at the Annual Cookin in Central event. Houses that start at 250K up to 1M+, all of them packed together almost like townhomes, no yard. They look nice but I couldn't imagine living there.
I grew up in Central and some parts are unrecognizable from what they once were. I live in an older part of town though, North Woods. Grew up in Alford Acres, which is another really old neighborhood.

As of today, I'm at 6.78 GB used on this billing cycle. I have until Nov 2 to go. Luckily I haven't received a warning yet nor have they ever throttled my speeds. At least I don't think.
