New Orleans Pelicans
The Pellies have the highest ceiling of this group thanks to our new overlord Anthony Davis and a starry top six that have at least a shot at meshing better than anticipated. The combination of Omer Asik and Davis should shut off the rim for a team that ranked a ghastly 26th in points allowed per possession last season, especially if Monty Williams follows Thibodeau’s Team USA lead in dropping Davis back against the pick-and-roll. But the team’s offense bogged down when Davis shared the floor last season with true centers like Alexis Ajinca and Greg Stiemsma. Asik is a better pick-and-roll player than those two, but he has stone hands and his range extends no further than the length of his arm. Toss in Tyreke Evans, a non-shooter and perhaps the de facto starter at the barren small forward position, and the Pelicans might not have enough spacing in their potential starting five.
New Orleans is frighteningly punchless beyond its top six, but Williams still has a few remedies at hand. He could start Darius Miller at small forward and stick him in the corners, and then have Evans driving like a bulldozer off the bench with Ryan Anderson — a.k.a. the Grenade Launcher. Lineups featuring those two scorched earth last season, and though Anderson is a defensive liability at power forward, the basket should be a no-fly zone as long as either Davis or Asik are nearby to patrol it. Having Jrue Holiday back hounding dudes at the point of attack will be huge, and he’s a good enough shooter to spot up around Evans’s pick-and-rolls when they share the floor.
This is a shallow team that can’t afford bad luck with health, and the two highly paid wings here — Evans and Eric Gordon — have to prove they can blend with everyone else. There are too many questions to slot these guys into the playoffs ahead of more accomplished teams, but there could be something here. There’d better be, considering all the first-round picks they’ve tossed away.

Lowe is generally high on the Pelicans and he may be the only person who has confidence in Monty Williams.

Jae Crowder and Al-Farouq Aminu bring beastly defense off the bench
So tired of every article i've read this offseason acting like Aminu is Scottie Pippen. There's absolutely nothing "beastly" about anything Aminu does on a basketball, other rebound well, for his position. Certainly nothing beastly about his defense. Do "beasts" like Aminu typically have to wait until the end of the free agency period to finally get a league minimum contract offer?

2 years in a row. He seemed like a pity re-signing last season.

Can't see how he's high on the rockets.
Team should be a tier lower.

Been saying this - If anyone slips in that list and lets Pels in the playoffs - It's going to be Dallas. Their two best players could easily go down for the season. Just as easy as EG or Tyreke could.

Don't agree with him calling our bench punchless considering a bunch of them started the 2nd half of last season and played well all things considering. Jimmer and Babs will go bombs away from deep this year

This season is going to be awesome if we stay healthy.
I like Memphis enough but I don't see them being 2 tiers ahead of us. We can easily be as good as Houston/Dallas/GSW.
Houston just doesn't scare me that much for some reason. Yeah, they will probably be in the playoffs but we should be able to split with them. Everyone bashes our bench but theirs is no better.
I think the tiers are pretty fair but would bump us and Phoenix to tier 3 and probably jump Dallas to tier 2, I think they've improved.

quote:Best C and best 2 guard in the L. Elite at 3 positions defensively(Howard, Bev, Ariza). One of most efficient teams offensively in the league since Harden has been there. I don't know what's not to like with the exception of a few questions marks about the bench. They should be top 10 offensively and defensively that's a sure fire playoff team in todays NBA.

Elite and Ariza don't mix. I can give you 5 and 2... 3, not so much. Now take that and leave. I don't understand why you come back.

I think 3rd tier is fine and they should make the playoffs but the Pelicans could easily finish with the better record. They are far from elite and are are nothing more than a 1st/2nd round playoff exit team, similar to what we hope the Pels are right now.

A .500 season would be a success for the Pels. a .500 season for Houston and the coach and GM would be fired.

Well a .500 season will probably get our coach and GM fired so I disagree.
