Why don't the cheerleaders lead the stadium in pregame cheers anymore?

I remember as a kid, before the band came out, one of the guy cheerleaders would lead the stadium in a few cheers over a mic.

Why did they stop and when did they stop? I just realized tonight that this hasn't been done in a while.

Probably laziness. In fact, now that the marching band is PAID, they also perform less than ever (when you would think that the reverse would be true since money is now involved).

Yeah, I remember this also....used to be those old-timey corny cheers like "two bits" and "hot boudin", etc...but damn it it got everybody 'on the same page'.

On a related note, since it's apparently time for the old-timers to grumble- WHY CAN'T THE ENTIRE STADIUM CHANT "TIGER BAIT" WHEN THE OPPONENT COMES ON THE FIELD ANYMORE?

This smattering of lukewarm "boos" nowadays to me is a microcosm of all the things that are gone or changed for the worse from the mystique and legend.

If i remember correctly, it is not necessarily payment, it is a stipend for members due to the fact they give up their entire weekends and free time and cannot easily hold jobs. It isn't much money either from what i understand.

And scholarships, housing, etc. It's technically getting paid. A penny saved is a penny earned.

Consider that there are no constraints on how many hrs a band member has to practice during the wk. They practice a hell of a lot more than football playes, excluding the game day on Sat.Break down a $1000 for 4 mths & then by the hr and they are quality cheap labor.

That's great. Really. But the issue remains that the more they are paid, the less they play at games (and the more music is piped in).

If people wanted to hear Souljah Boi piped in all day, they would probably save their money and stay home just to listen to Souljah Boi. When people pay all that money to buy tickets, however, they are there to partake in the extra gameday atmosphere that you can't quite capture on TV--things like the marching band.

When bandmembers started claiming that they didn't need to march down Victory Hill into the stadium before the game any more, that certainly didn't win them any sympathy.

Kinda like student atheletes?

Seriously, it brings up a perfect argument for paying players. Student atheletes don't have tie during the season to get a job so that they can eat out or rent an apartment or pay a car note like other students can. Of the band gets a stipend then players should too.

I'm glad they did.
Nothing more lame than shouting 1 bits, 2 bits, 3 bits a dollar.

I can get up and holler when the game starts and when the band plays.

When: About 13-15 years ago, ish…

Why: They became pushed for time with all the other on-the-field stuff that goes on before the game, so the "stadium cheer" with the cheerleaders gradually got the boot permanently. On top of that, a lot of other school began to phase it out.

MOTHERfrickING THIS!!!!

I HATE the booing. That is soooo fricking lame and is not unique to Tiger Stadium AT ALL whereas TIGERBAIT definitely is. Booing is not intimidating in the least especially the little weak smattering of boos that occur and is in fact heartening to the opponent because of how weak it is. BUT, the entire stadium shouting TIGERBAIT TIGERBAIT TIGERGBAIT would be at least slightly intimidating by demonstrating what is in store from the 100,000+ rabid Tiger fans in the stands. I remember it being done and it would pump the excitement level up and engage the crowd from the very beginning.

I think they stopped doing the cheers when they couldn't get anyone to cheer anymore because we all became sticks-in-the-mud because we were too good for that since we now win championships.

HELL we couldn't even muster a decent round of applause for Billy Cannon and Bert Jones this past weekend. It really made me sorta sick to see that. Just pitiful. /rant

Volunteers can't be called lazy because they are donating their own personal time, for free, on their own terms.

But once someone ceases being a volunteer and starts taking a salary, they are taking that salary based upon a set of conditions--and therefore can and will be criticized if they fail to uphold those conditions.

There was some applause for Billy Cannon, but it wasn't real…

And maybe I am wrong, but I think for a lot of people, trotting out Billy Cannon, "great all-American" every time we play Ole Miss has kinda played itself out.

Why can't? Or Why don't? Either way, its absence is one more example of the eroding power of Tiger Stadium. I think it would be great to revive this tradition with a vengeance, when Alabama comes to town.
