Anyone else had this problem, or a similar one before? My sons started messing up and he said a sound it was making it had not been making it before. It kind of sounded like a jet taking off.

So I guess a couple of questions:
Anyone know of a fix? We (wife and I) youtubed a couple of videos and tried some things but to no avail.
If it is down, (1) Is it worth it to pay someone to fix it? and (2) Where would you take it to get fixed? Geek Squad?
I am all for getting him an XBone, but he is hung up on losing his friends, progress, etc., so if we went the route of 360 again, is there a way he can take his saved data and bring it to a new box?

Any help, suggestions, etc is very much appreciated!

ETA: We bought it secondhand so there is no warranty.

Disk drive is probably fricked. You can get a new one for $20-30. Just make sure you get the correct model for your sons 360.

you probably have to replace the disk reader, but you have to get the same model drive and use the original logic board from your current reader in place of the board in the replacement reader or microsoft will think you have a modded box and brick your console.

i used to fix consoles for a side job in school. this one is pretty easy if you can find a matching diskdrive.

You should be able to find one on eBay or Amazon.

first you need to open up the xbox and find out which one you need.

If you have to take it apart to identify the drive, you can try repairing it yourself. You will need to remove and grease the spindle. I have repaired a few by doing this. Just make sure you count the number of turns when you remove the laser so you can set it back correctly.

Mine started that about a year ago, and ended with it laser burning a game a couple weeks ago.

That's not helpful information, I just wanted to post something ITT.

Mine had this problem before finally crapping out. I got another year out of it by opening and closing the disc drive and tapping on the top of the console with the console laid horizontal while it was trying to read the disc. If it didn't work I would open and close the drive and try again. It would take a couple tries but always worked...for about a year.

Too funny man! My wife and I watched a video of some guy doing the exact same thing and we looked at each other and just laughed. But hell, we would have tried it if our son wasn't asleep.

To all, I appreciate the advice!
