Is it really that "cliche"? I think Nucky walking away from a life of crime isn't realistic at all in my mind. He had to go in some capacity and Tommy killing the man who killed his father makes sense.

And really, most of those guys on the show (at least the ones that were real historical characters) never left a life of crime. Capone ended up in jail for his. Luciano ran the Commission with Lansky and Siegel as advisors right up until his death.

Torrio is the only one I can think of that "went quietly" and that was after jail time and allegedly a promise to his wife that he would walk away.

It's a gangster show. People die. Even major figureheads (see Masseria, Rothstein, etc). Sometimes they die for shite that happened a long time ago. I think it's only cliche if you don't accept that murder is a pretty big way of life for the mob.

Glad to see that bastard finally get his.

I figured something would happen to Nucky, but didn't see that ending coming. However, it was fitting. It was just revenge I didn't see coming.

Actually surprised in a way that Nucky didn't realize who this kid was before that point.

Quality finale, and with only eight episodes to work with I thought the entire season was put to good use. You got to know major characters even better than before, getting to know what made them tick, and all story lines were wrapped up (except Mabel's). The casting of the younger characters this season was spot on, especially young Gillian. As for an alternative ending with Nucky living, perhaps that could've been done within twelve episodes, who knows.

A great series. Sad to see it end.

So Nucky hands a pre teen Gillian over to the child molesting Commodore to become sheriff. The Commodore knocks Gillian up and has son named Jimmy. Jimmy has a son named Tommy then Nucky kills Jimmy. Tommy grows up and kills Nucky. Karma is a bitch

Yep, and in a bullshite shortened season, they did a great job of ending it and I liked it a lot. There is so much more they could have explored. Obviously the Capone and Lucky angles could be their own show.

It shows how Nucky sold his soul to climb the ladder. The previous Sheriff couldn't do the job anymore for moral reasons. The flashbacks give you an idea of how Nucky lost his way or found his way (however you view it). I found the final season to be dark but incredible. Luciano begins his reign as the godfather of organized crime by uniting the families through the commision. I was watching a couple episodes from season 1 and it was way different in mood. Season 3 was incredible too. Overall, this will become a cult classic, it's a solid A.

The flashbacks in this episode were incredible, man oh man that last one...

It's a shame that a show of this caliber had to end...the commission stuff alone with Luciano and now the five families could be its own show. Obviously, Capone's story is about to end.

With all the Louisiana love lately in TV and movies maybe we can one day get a movie/TV show about the birth of the U.S La Costra Nostra in New Orleans and Carlos Marcello.

question- when jimmy shot nucky, who were the two guys who came over and what did they yell at Nucky?

were those two of Luckys men who were going to shoot Nucky if jimmy didn't?

Tommy shot Nucky and I think they were Federal agents.

That's what I thought as well. Don't know why though as they didn't show Nucky being actively investigated this season and the FBI had to have known through their connections that Nucky had been pushed out and was done. We're they trying to show in the end that he was either going to die or he was going to jail? I didn't get that part.

Back to the ending of this series. In terms of the story arc and the Nucky, Gillian, Jimmy, Tommy story coming full circle the ending makes perfect sense. Probably the only way it could have ended. There are some issues I have with it and why I say it could have ended with Nucky living. That could have worked because they could have showed that, in then end, everything he did was for nothing and he had nothing to show for it. No family, Atlantic City is not his, and his illegal dealings left nothing but a wake of destruction.

There are also continuity issues. Gillian always maintained that Nucky was always there to help her and Jimmy. Nucky has always been good to us, she'd say. As for Nucky killing Jimmy, it was a mercy killing. Remember how that ended with those two. Jimmy put Nucky in a corner and gave him no other choice, he literally committed suicide and wanted to die anyways. He said that he had died a long time ago, during the Great War. Nucky putting him down was what Jimmy wanted, and that is why it was so sad when that went down.

Then there is Tommy. Tommy was way too young to know what was going on or to remember anything Gillian said. Even if he did, he admitted himself he was conflicted as he said the way Gillian talked he didn't know whether she hated Nucky or loved him. It doesn't even fit that Tommy was old enough to kill Nucky as he should have only been about 13. For argument's sake let's just say he was old enough, given what Tommy has seen and heard what was his motivation to kill Nucky? I mean, we all know he killed Jimmy, but how does Tommy know that? Why would Tommy have any malice towards Nucky if Gillian never said any harsh words, he was too young to understand, and spent his formative years being raised on a farm in Wisconsin with Julia.

For the watcher of the show the ending makes sense. Given how the details of the show, making Tommy Darmody Nucky's killer is suspect in my opinion.

Oh, nice foreshadowing when Nucky was in his office collecting his things and they showed him picking up financial documents, among them his life insurance policies. In the end Margaret inherits the $2+ million stock protfolio, the life insurance, and everything else that was Nucky's. Mrs. Schroeder sure did well for herself.

Lucky was always going to remove Narcisse from the herion equation.

I thought they played Joseph Kennedy too sympathetic. He was a POS from head to toe. Other than that its difficult to find any fault with this season's shows.

Not to get off topic, but I was reading a few things on the final episode and saw that Scorsese and Winter are working on another HBO series about the life of a Rock n Roll record label president in the 70's. Mick Jagger will be an Executive Producer...sound interesting
