Dallas News

I have searched and could not see this posted before.

Do you think that your University will be able to do the same?

I am note sure VT will be able to compete with this in the long run. I could see it for football and basketball, but not sure about the non-revenue sports.

I don't like this. IMO it will ruin college football. The few big schools with large amounts of cash will rule college football.

Anything but men's football, baseball and basketball will get kicked to the curb

The NCAA makes billions of dollars. Give a $300 a month stipend to all college athletes while they are enrolled in classes.

johnny manziel is an "oil rich" kid with a mercedes. he allegedly sold autographs so he could get rims on his car. everyone always wants more. guys on wall street cook on the books so their $20M bonus turns into $30M. if you think some tiny stipend will satisfy these kids, youre begging....

So because they'll want more your solution is to give them nothing ?

I personally don't see what this accomplishes.

If you are going to pay the athletes a stipend I really think it should come from the NCAA otherwise this is destined to squeeze the smaller schools out.

Seems like an unfair recruiting advantage to me.

Texas has a war chest, that rivals no one.

They could literally give 100K to each kid and still show a major profit. Their boosters line up to throw money in the till. Oil Barons that love to give the Horns their cash.

They get a free education, that's plenty enough.

Yep

Otherwise this is the beginning of the end of college athletics as we know it.

no. i beleive in the olympic model. let the kids market and brand themselves and get money from any idiot willing to give them money. as long as the schools dont pay, b/c then theyd have to pay everyone, and title IX gets in the way. this type of thing happens all the time in college football recruiting anyways. bring it into the light.

and if the ncaa were to pay all athelets $300/month, it would be 420,000 ncaa athletes X $300 X 8 months (4 spring semester, 4 fall months) = $1,008,000,000. no one can just hand over a billion dollars like that

It's not an issue for a huge athletic department like Texas, but what about all the small D1 schools that are already operating in the red?

And how do you justify only paying participants of certain sports? It just opens the pandoras box of questions and issues that no one seems to ever answer.

It's always focused on how much the high major programs make and it's always only talked about in relation to football and basketball.

And for those that talk about how much the NCAA makes, yes, the NCAA itself makes a lot of money. The individual schools themselves do not. And the majority of the money that the NCAA makes is doled out to the member institutions.

small schools are already being squeezed out. UT makes #100M a year. how can smaller schools compete with that? they just manage the best they can. kinda like moneyball and the oakland As vs the new york yankees. everyone thinks money solves everything. mo money, mo problems.

i mean, how is baylor beating texas? its not a money counting party, its athletic competition.
