Interesting article in The American Conservative
LINK

quote:

They were not wrong. In my opinion, Obama has governed as a moderate conservative—essentially as what used to be called a liberal Republican before all such people disappeared from the GOP. He has been conservative to exactly the same degree that Richard Nixon basically governed as a moderate liberal, something no conservative would deny today. (Ultra-leftist Noam Chomsky recently called Nixon “the last liberal president.”)

I've been saying this for years.

Obama governs more to the right than people realize. He is a disgusting embarrassment to liberals.

"Is" vs. "has governed."

Also, presidents don't "govern."

Why? Because the house is controlled by republicans?

He's more of a fascist. Crony capitalism, overseas adventurism, trampling of civil liberties, using social issues to divide and conquer. Only thing missing is jingoism.

No, he's a big government liberal, just like George W Bush.

For example his immigration policy is big time corporatism and very much against labor. Liberal icon Cesar Chavez would vomit on Obama's immigration policy. Donor class Republicans love it.

Bush on Steroids has been said many times, for a reason. Bad just doesn't do him justice.

Seriously, Progressives have been against him for ages because of this. He's a moderate conservative.

I'd say that article nails it.

The implication being "typical" republicans in DC are big government liberals--Boehner, McCain, Cochran, etc. That too is true.

But, Rand Paul.

This article seems to presume true conservatism is dead, and Repubs are strictly hawkish Bushesque neo-cons. Therefore, we can completely redefine the term.

I don't accept that.

I think it takes into account that conservatism isn't an American thing; it's global. A moderate liberal here is conservative in most places.

Progressives? Nah. Not in lock step. They voted a lot like people here voting for Gary Johnson. They went Green Party or didn't vote.

Took years to come around on gay marriage and not by his choice. He is all about government control and tramples the constitution especially on civil liberties. I can't believe his power grab in the executive office because he comes from the legislative branch. This guy is the opposite of liberal. Much closer to Bush.
