That's why if you don't pay, you wind up getting calls from collection agencies, instead of spending the night in OPP.

I agree completely with SpidermanTUba on all points.
This "face your accuser" shite is null and void. It's a civil offense. The U.S. Constitutional protection on facing your accuser applies only to criminal offenses.
And once the OP said he was "daydreaming" and "only got a ticket for expired inspection sticker" tells me that his head is up his arse most of the time, and that he is more likely than most to run over someone, either a pedestrian or rear-ending a vehicle.
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

You must assume debt unless a judgement is issued against you
I wouldn't pay this and if it showed up on my credit report, I'd sue the tits off of the city

quote:My wife's cousin from Illinois got popped here in Iowa for turning right at a stop light ( accident in the right hand turning lane) they would hear none of it concerning the accident ( clearly the camera couldn't see it)we even took the accident log along with us to prove there was an accident. She was all upset I told her to tell them to blow it out their collective asses. She went back to Illinois and never paid the ticket. She received one nasty letter concerning her credit etc... she sent them a copy of everything we had and said I will see you in court. Promptly dropped.

Wait... are you writing that it's only collectible debt if a judgment has been issued?
Guess what... it's a judgment.

That is the PRICE of going 1 mile over. The trap won't necessarily trigger at 1 mile over. You weren't going 1 mile over though, were you. You were going 10 miles over. So I don't understand your complaint.
As I understand it, they are not programmed to record a ticket for going less than five miles over the limit.

You have the right to face your accuser in court. These camera tickets are clearly unconstitutional. I would fight it.

The problem is they are not criminal or penal. They are classified as "civil" fines (I know . . . it's absurd). Not the same constitutional protection.

Why would the people of New Orleans agree to live under this police state bullshite?
When they first put the one on Chartres up somebody immediately necklaced it...

I've been driving for over half of my lifetime and have not gotten into a single wreck. When I said I was "daydreaming", I was still paying attention to where I was going, just not looking at the speedometer. It was that stretch on Bluebonnet between Nicholson and Springlake where there are just fields on either side yet the speed limit is a ridiculously low 40 mph.

It is very clear these cameras are not meant for public safety when the ticket I received for speeding says, "This violation is a non-moving infraction. No points will be assessed and the infraction will not be reported to your insurance company."
Everything about this screams money grab. They want to make it as easy a decision as possible to just pay up. It feels like a shake down from the government.

The price is $75 for going 1 mile over
New Orleans must be really desperate for cash.
I also remember hearing one day that this can't go on your driving record because they can't prove that you were the one driving the car. So pretty much they are charging your car for going to fast not you.

that is because they can't prove that you are driving the car.
I could give my car to a friend, he runs a red-light and a photo is taken of my car. If that was a penal or criminal charge than I would be charged with something, I would break the law even though I wasn't driving my car. Because of this it is only a civil fine.

Most people know their speed from looking at their speedometer

You clearly weren't, so a camera with a radar decided to inform you of your speed for you. Isn't that awesome?
quote:I agree, only government knows the speed at which you are capable of driving responsibly.
How can the government get away with this bullshite?
With what? Passing laws against speeding that apply, even at night?
quote:POSTING speed limits is a form of police state. But I'm sure they're happy to know you've been so inculcated to it that it just seems "normal" to you.
Enforcing speed limits is now a "police state"?
quote:Well, at least you admit it. That's a start.
I had no idea.

Upvote.
Government using Crony-Capitalism Corporations to collect fines from the citizens. What else can we do with cameras? Jay Walkers, litering, hell what about drones to watch our backyards. No telling what we are all doing back there. We have cameras on our laptops, government should just watch us with those, oh wait they do!
Yeah, no police state here. Nothing to see. Carry on people.

Yeah, if people would just submit to an implanted microchip, we could bypass all this surveillance camera nonesense, amirite?
Posted on 10/22/14 at 10:00 am to lsu13lsu
We thought we had to read 1984 to scare us. Now we know it was to get us used to the idea of our government always watching us to protect us from ourselves.

What's clear is you don't give a damn about public safety.

Everything about you screams whiny baby who blames the rest of the world for his problems. Shut the frick up, be a grown up, pay your ticket, don't speed in New Orleans.
