shite, if I hit the lottery today for 6MM I don't see myself working any longer.

Hire someone to do some investing on my behalf and live a nice uppermiddle lifestyle.

For me, I don't want to set a number. I'm not a guy that will define myself by how much I've made at the end of my rope anyway, but I can say that I will never stop striving to hit a new mark or think up something new or take a calculated risk if an opportunity arises. One day it will be time to hang it up and enjoy the twilight I have left. Until then, I don't want to set a mark. If I hit the mark I MIGHT become content.

But if I had a gun to my head? 10 million, for starters!

I'm 61 and have $750K. My wife and I could retire to her home country, the Philippines, tomorrow and live just fine for the rest of our lives. Of course, she doesn't want to do this, which means I work until I:
A. Can get max SS $ or …
B. Die

Depends how liquid that is.

Do you have other recurring revenue? Rental income, dividends, SSI?

Are you in debt? House paid off?

I would like to take this approach. If I could find a job that I actually like this might be an option.

In today's dollars, I think $2MM between myself and my future wife would suffice.

1 million (will yield around 40k per year invested and when you account for inflation). I will also have a pension, 401k, and wife's pension.

Conservative, but agree that is a good number to use to account for up and down economies.

wouldn't your number include your 401k?

pensions are a little harder to determine a hard number on cause you can die tomorrow and it's worth $0

You say that because you are healthy. I have had arthritis since my early 20s, and it will probably put me out of work in my 50s. Trying to stuff away as much a I can. Tons of people fail to take ther health into account when they start their retirement planning. But just assume you will have at minimum a minor issue.

1/2 of however much $ my mother has when she passes away, it will be plenty.

If I die tomorrow I ain't worried much about retirement.

Hopefully if someone is relying on their spouses income they have proper insurance to account for that loss.
