They usually stay on bunny slopes though

There is a plethora of very good outdoor brand out there for pretty deep discounts. For the person making the occasional ski or backpacking trip, you can get very competent gear for affordable prices if you dig a little.

Do you even know what a "plethora" is?

I have a spyder jacket. Bought it because it wasn't a NF like everyone else was wearing.

the first time I went snowboarding a few years ago, I borrowed my dad's old ski outfit from the 80's-A blinding, neon yellow jacket and bright blue pants. Everybody was laughing at me, torn between laughing at my outfit or repetitive falling.

Next year, what were all the gnarly ColordadoBros wearing? Bright fricking yellow and green 80's colors! Who's laughing now!?

Columbia owns Mountain Hardware, BTW. And there is talk of VF (who owns North Face) merging w Columbia so it may all be the same shite soon!

I tend to be pretty hard on stuff and/or get it lost or stolen so I buy decent stuff in layers and on sale. But never shell out big bucks on any one item.

To OP, get a really good base layer and a breathable waterproof shell layer and good gloves helmet socks and goggles and keep for years.

I'm about to make warranty claims on a MH shell, a NF rain jacket/shell and a Patagonia mid weight water resistant outer. The Patagonia is the toughest of the three--damage my fault, which I'll disclose and see what happens. The other two are just falling apart.

I have a Marmot synthetic down for mid layer that i got on clearance because i almost froze this past Feb when it was 20 below. Will update on that one.

I left a jacket on a plane once and had to replace in CO but didn't want to spend a bunch at beginning of season so I got a Marker heavy duty jacket at that cheap place in Dillon. It's actually pretty badass and people think I'm ski patrol (that could be good and bad I guess).

I ski mostly local hills in MT where I've never caught anyone eyeing my gear and have never noticed anyone else's. Not males' anyway....

I have a very nice spider jacket that iced had for many years. Still is in great shape and style still looks good compared to new stuff. Would recommend

Burton pants.

Spyder is definitely the top out of the three. Helly Hansen makes some really nice jackets as well.

Arc'teryx makes some really good ski clothes- lightweight and less cumbersome than some other brands, but still keeps you warm. There's a price to be paid for it, but if you look around you can find last year's stuff for a decent discount.

Agree w Arc'teryx

Best shite made

None of those brands are worth a shite. Go with Marmot, Outdoor Research, or Mountain Hardware.

I've had most of the brands mentioned ('cept the grossly overpriced Arcteryx), but my Spyder jacket from 8 years ago or so is the best of the bunch. Excellent quality and materials.

The spyder I want is a solid 140 or so more than marmot alternative , can't really justify that for a blue moon trip
