Arc'teryx makes some really good ski clothes- lightweight and less cumbersome than some other brands, but still keeps you warm. There's a price to be paid for it, but if you look around you can find last year's stuff for a decent discount.

A few years ago I bought a Spyder jacket 1/2 off at the Backpacker- great jacket. Again, look for the sales to save some $

Columbia makes good stuff too for those on a budget.

Steepandcheap.com and geartrade.com are good sites to look into.

IMHO, the biggest differences between the brands are quality of stitching/welting/zippers, and the breathability

There is a plethora of very good outdoor brand out there for pretty deep discounts. For the person making the occasional ski or backpacking trip, you can get very competent gear for affordable prices if you dig a little.

yes, you can get it for dirt cheap at or towards the end of the season, I ski pretty hard and all I care about is warmth and comfort, I've got a pair of bibs that are almost 30 yrs. old that are still fine, plus if you wear older gear you hear fewer snarky comments from the gnarly locals when you're taking the pummel up to the extreme areas

Yep. You don't need a thousand dollars worth of gear if you ski once or twice a year. Post season you can load up on decent stuff at great pricing. If you're label conscious it will cost you quite a bit more.

yankeeundercover Ski Gear Shopping: North Face, Columbia or Spyder? Arc'teryx, Marmot, Karbon. The three brands you named are for posers.

Since I've never been skiing posing is all I got and look forward to

seriously the most important thing is warmth and comfort, I'd spend more on the underwear, gloves/glove liners, and good socks/liners, you'll get hooked, have fun
