Spyder seems to be a few more bucks but really more interesting and better designs.

Any name brand will be fine for someone who is only skiing a few days a year. Buy whatever looks best.

Interesting? Probably so. They seem to think that the cooler the graphics, the better you'll ski.

More bucks, definitely!

Better designs? You talking graphics and colors or functional design? North Face has nice stuff, but I've heard reviews that they are not what they used to be now that they've gone more mainstream. Columbia is down and dirty basic. No graphics that are going to demand attention, but the quality is solid and the price is reasonable.

Back in the day all you needed was a North Face Mountain Light jacket and a Denali fleece to zip into it. I'm sure technology has changed in the past few years, but I just can't imagine dropping $500+ on Arc'Teryx stuff.*

*until it gets cold and I start buying that shite like I'm a guide on K2.

A lot of brands are good and will keep you warm and dry. For really cold days (sub-20s), I have a heavy Spyder jacket. For anything above that, I have a Norrona shell. Both are great. The Norrona is super light weight and has kept me bone dry through a lot of snow and rain.

Spyder makes some really badass gear. However, if you don't ski on a bi-weekly basis, it's a waste of money.
It's high end gear meant for people who will actually use it a lot.
Of course, you could always drop the coin on it so you look good going up the lift and get laughed at sliding down the mountain on your $500 arse.

Arcterx if you're a baller. Mountain Hardware or Patagonia if you aren't, but still want quality stuff

Patagonia fleeces and down jackets are really nice, but Mountain Hardware beats them for the uninsulated stuff. I've never had a reason to buy Arcterx stuff, so I don't own any
