And the o-line was much better in 1997.

Herb was a junior with 15+ games under his belt when we beat Florida.

27-11 in his career - and was 3rd in the conference in passing efficiency in both his junior and senior years.

Rushed for 23 touchdowns, passed for 5876 yards, 40 touchdowns, 24 interceptions.

Conversely, if we had 2011's defense in 2014, we would have beaten MSU, easily (as long as Harris comes in when he did) - AND Auburn is a lot more competetive - we still might have lost, but it would have been more like 17-3.

I was thinking the same thing this morning, remembering that game. NO ONE gave that LSU team a chance and look what happened!
I am always positive about our team, tough though it has been this year, but I sense an upset in the air.
Back in the late 60's, early 70's when I was at LSU, this week before the OM game was magical on campus, what with panty raids, etc. Not so much for the last 30 or so years.
Tigers 21-OM 17 BRO Wallace throws a pick with seconds to go. Tigers score with minus 3 secs on clock.

We didn't see enough of Perrilloux to say differently, but Herb was the best "throw on the run" QB in LSU history - he was more accurate on the run than some of our "pocket passers" were.

If we had 1997 Herb Tyler on this team, we would be a much better football team.

True. Herb Tyler was a beast. And let's not forget Kevin Faulk. He was a threat every time he touched the ball.

I'm not dissing Herb, you people. I was a huge fan of Herb. I'm just trying to find something positive here. The positive is that there was a bigger chasm between LSU and Florida in 1997 than between LSU and Ole Miss in 2014. Neither LSU team racked up huge yards in the air.

Ole Miss is a pretender led by a world class douchebag QB.

Tigers win..

I mentioned the way that scenerio could happen in another thread. Much like the UF '97 game, we will need turnovers and special teams. Herb played a great game. He managed the game well and ran his butt off. But it was interceptions and returns that won that game. The defense kept that high powered offense in check and made the plays when they were there.
LSU will need the same things to happen to win, along with Jennings doing just enough without mistakes.
I for one think it can happen.

First off- HT in '97 > than current AJ.
Second- point well taken that the '97 Gators were a better all-around team relative to the rest of the SEC than this OM team relative to a very good SEC.
Third- Agreed that LSU can win and in fact if they avoid turnovers and dumb penalties they stand a better than punchers chance to pull off the slight upset.

The '97 team would beat this year's team by 2 scores.
