before reading this thread I didn't know the answer to this

Everyone's glued to their sets when the rushing record gets seriously challenged.

How about Nolan Ryan's 5,714 strikeouts? Number 2 on the list is Randy Johnson with 4,875.

That means Nolan Ryan has the record by nearly a thousand. That's pretty insane.

It's not even the most prestigious in football. Since the NFL is now Glorified Arena Football, Favre/Manning/Brady/Brees are shattering all the records and a new one gets set every other year. It's very watered down

Pure facts here.....

Cal Ripken's 2,632 consecutive games played is pretty damn impressive!! That's 16 years without missing a game

Probably because baseball fans won't shut up about stats. It seems like most of the baseball fans I know care about stats more than wins and losses.

Maybe not the most prestigious record, but the NFL record for interceptions in a season (Night Train Lane, I believe) has stood since the 1950's, and there are a lot more footballs in the air nowadays. 14 interceptions by a DB is a shitload.

Hitting in 56 straight games is a "hot streak"?? Good lord.

Sadly, Peyton will break this as well

Way off. I'm a huge sports fan with one exception: baseball. I couldn't tell you anything about who holds and type of home run records. But I know water is wet.

Pete Rose's 4000 hits is better than the passing touchdown record.

There is no right answer. It is impossible to rank records not only across sports but even within one sport. I don't know why you would even try.

Hit record definitely has to be near the top. There's been a lot of great hitters and nobody has broke this record.

IMO Favre starting 299 is "more impressive" of a record than Manning throwing 509.

I tend to agree with this.

Cal Ripken Jr with 2,632 consecutive games is up there too.

You didn't know about it when Favre surpassed Marino?

It isn't prestigious

Um...throwing 500 TD's in a the nations most popular sport where the average player plays for 2.5 years isn't "prestigious"?

This is why sports talk radio is so bad. If anybody thinks the TD record is more prestigious that the HR record, they shouldn't be talking about sports.

Some people are confusing "most prestigious" with "hardest to break".

Most prestigious= season/career HR records, hit records.

Hardest to break= Dimaggio's hit streak, Ripken's game streak, Favre's game streak, Vandermeer's consecutive no-hitters.

Dimaggio's hit streak is both, so i vote for that.

Once again, the baseball records are more prestigious, based on the history of the game. Mannings TD record might be the most prestigious football record though.
