Would top European talent come to MLS if it doubled their salary?

I was just lookin around at some of the bigger names around Europe and saw that nearly all of their salaries were under 10 million a year. Many people think that Champions League is a huge obstacle in getting players here, but if MLS can pay like the MLB or NFL some of these superstars would get payed 2 or 3 times as much.

Hard to say. The closest comparison has been with basketball, and some players have chosen to play in Europe over the NBA because they can be paid more (although the clubs are much shadier when it comes to actually paying).

At the same time, lots of players choose to be bench guys for minimum in the NBA over moving to Europe for more money.

They would get better talent than they currently have, but not being able to play in the Champions League means that majority of the top players are going to want to play against the best and will stay in Europe.

Ya but I feel Americans wouldn't want to leave America.(This country rocks) Many Europeans want a taste of that American dream.

If the MLS theoretically could pay everyone MLB type salaries, then I think it would have the potential to get a lot of the top players. If it was more or less the same as now with a couple of top players getting high salaries and the rest earning well below a million, then I don't think there would be much ability to get top players in their prime.

I find that incredibly hard to believe. If I was a top prospect and had to choose between a club like the Galaxy or a club in Europe like Ajax. I would go to Europe every time. I would prefer somewhere with history and tradition over new money. Player preference I guess is what I was trying to get at.

This. Hell, right now if I suddenly became an awesome soccer player and had equal offers from Spurs and Galaxy, I'm off to London.

But if that offer was 4 times higher in MLS you wouldn't take it?

4-8 million is around the salary range for players like Gerrard and Terry. If MLS pays like the typical American league these players can get over 20 mil a year

Nope. I know it sounds crazy, but I want to play with the bests. And I want to play in the leagues with tradition. And maybe after my prime, I come to the states for a big pay day.

The trick would be to convince a ton of players to come over at once. Tough to do.

I think you would have to start with a lower tier of players. The type of guys who can start for lower table top division clubs. You can't go straight to the world class players.

MLS doesn't have that kind of money yet.

Let's focus on getting another designated player spot first.

I'm amazed that this thread has been here over an hour and SCH hasn't been in here yet to say this. He must be doing something.

Threads like this - and people wonder why the board is dead.

They'd play in Pakistan for double the money.

No need to state the obvious.

UCL soccer along with just natural tribalism and local pride also are factors.
