This is the exact reason why body cams are needed around the country.

I think the dog owners are like 10% responsible for this for letting their dogs get free- but that's not an excuse for cops to shoot on sight.

Warning- you're about to watch a dog get shot in cold blood.

Body cam video

Dallas Local news report

quote:

An officer was called to the 1500 block of Lindsey Lane when one of Tatum and Henderson's neighbors said in a 911 call that a group of pit bulls were running around her car. The neighbor said an elderly woman and an infant were in her car and that they couldn't get out.

When the officer arrived on scene, he discovered three pit bulls.

One of them, DoBoy, put his paws on the officer's chest.

Later, the officer comes across the other two pit bulls in a ditch nearby, including Maximus.

In a police report, the officer says he made kissing noises, trying to calm Maximus.

He says in the report, “I raised my duty weapon to the ready position – pointed at the growling dog's head. As soon as I lifted my pistol, the dog began coming up the hill, continuing to growl and display its teeth…I fired three shots at it.”

“They don't match up,” said Henderson. “'Cause whenever we see the video, it's heartbreaking. What I see is him kissing him over to kill him.”

They're issued a side arm and desperately want to use it.

Those who pick on animals are insecure in their own, and need to have a feeling of power.

Put him in a pissed off lions den. See how bad arse he is.

So some dogs were playing Cujo?

Eh...I really don't feel all that bad about this one. Keep your pets on your property and don't let them harass people and they won't get shot.

If it was a civilian I don't know if I'd blame him either. I'm no cop apologist but this is one of the more justifiable dog shootings I've seen.

Dogs harassing people and not on leash, out in public with no owner.

Cop gets a tentative pass on this one.

I know there are plenty of good cops out there, but there are so many horrible ones.

Kind of like the people that were trapped in the car and couldn't get out because of a pack of dogs harassing them?

Why wasn't the cop justified? If there were pits loose and menacing your grandmother and infant (or whatever) you wouldn't shoot them too?

What did the cop do wrong in this situation?

I was ready to be outraged until I saw in the excerpt that it was pitbulls. Left that tidbit out. All pitbulls should be euthanized anyway, those evil bastards.

Why don't you edit the title to read "Cop shoots pack of pit bulls menacing old woman and baby"

I will say that if you watch the news video, a dog catcher is shown catching the other two without firing any guns. This is what happens when cops become dog catchers.

Again- the dog owners bear some responsibility here. If they hadn't gotten out, they wouldn't have been shot. But I still have a hard time believing the cop feared for his life from watching the video.

Why wouldn't the cop let animal control take the lead on the call?

Meh, I wouldn't risk a dog bite especially with the breed history. Had this been a lab I would feel differently. Justified shooting IMHO. I rarely say that in cop threads.
