I'm way too paranoid to ever have my dog off leash. I know people walk their dogs without one because they are so well trained or whatnot, but I'll never be that person

There isn't much he can do to help the dog, and some dog owners have been known to get irrational and combative over that. Driving off is the safer and better thing to do IMHO.
