I noticed recently while commuting that the water is drawn down here. You can see mudflats and cypress stumps. Anyone know the reasoning?

You'd probably get better response on the Outdoor Board.

They started draining it in July as an attempt to control the hydrilla weeds.

quote:

“We have come to the realization that we are never going to get rid of all of it,” said St. Martin Parish President Guy Cormier.

He said the hope is to knock back the plant’s growth by lowering water levels about 2 feet every summer, enough to dry out the shallow areas in the roughly 5,000-acre lake and kill the hydrilla lurking there.

“Just doing that will expose about 75 percent of the hydrilla,” Cormier said.

It's been like that for nearly a month now. I don't think the wind has been that strong and constant

The drainage began Friday and will continue through November 1st.

"The re-germination period is September and October," Collette said.

"This plant can be exposed to the sun 4-6 weeks maybe 8 weeks maximum and then all of this here will turn to powder," Collette said.

Water will be pumped back into the lake fur duck season in November.

Wind moves water yes, but it won't drop the level of Henderson Lake 3 feet and sustain it for 2 months. Like Shexter said this is a highly controlled process being done in order to "bake" out the hydrilla that has seemingly take over that area.

I really hope you were being facetious...

There's no controlling hydrilla, you can only hope to contain it.

No argument from me, the stuff spreads like kudzu. All I meant was that the goal of this process is to expose the hydrilla to sunlight and air 24/hrs a day. Hydrilla has no spine, it depends on the water column to support its weight. Without water present, it lays over and begins to dry out, hence the draining. There are even going so far as to request boat traffic not go thru these areas to avoid wakes washing over the plants and re hydrating them.

That process also promotes bacterial and fungal growth as a negative unintended effect.

explains why the launch under I10 is shut down. They might want to go tell the 2-3 boats I see every morning by the pilings North of the interstate to quit running up there.

Can't have your cake and eat it too, baw.

They look at this as "Where are we at? What do we want? What's it gonna take to get there?" mentality. Can't be nitpicky with something that could potentially take over that whole aquatic system. The basin will purge itself once the draining stops
