That is spectacularly chilling.

Talk about feeling more helpless than that...

Yeah, can't imagine what he was thinking while taking that picture.

"Every orbit we kept trying to see more of what was happening," Culbertson said. "One of the most startling effects was that within about two orbits, all of the contrails that are normally crisscrossing the United States has disappeared because they had grounded all the airplanes and there was nobody else flying in U.S. airspace — except for one airplane that was leaving a contrail from the central U.S. toward Washington, and that was Air Force One headed back to D.C. with President Bush. It was a very sobering time for us."

Went from Florida to Shreveport.

Maybe the contrail was from Shreveport to DC. Not exactly central US, but thats probably the best description for it.

Pres. Bush was reading story books in an elementary school classroom in Florida at the time. He was interrupted by his staffers to inform him of the attack.

After leaving Florida, Air Force One took him to Barksdsle AFB in Louisiana, then on to Nebraska.

Edited for posterity.

17,150 miles per hour.

Makes a complete path once every 92 minutes.
