So I finally got around to watching Craven's supposed magnum opus last night and I found myself to be very underwhelmed.

There was a lack of continuity with the film's tone (e.g. sometimes the atmosphere was eerie and obviously attempting to be scary, while other scenes seemed satirical and ridiculous) and I wasn't sure if I was meant to laugh or feel scared at times.

However, the plot did keep you on your toes by not revealing who the killer was until the film's final act.

How do you classify this critically-acclaimed horror/comedy flick?

Horror that finally didn't take itself too seriously and delivered enough humor for the horror to really work.

Underrated movie.

That was the vibe I was getting from it. Especially when you consider some of the writing which directly pokes fun at the genre.

Ex:
"Yeah, I saw that movie. It was directed by that Wes Carpenter guy".

Both.

And it's one of the best horror movies of all time IMO. It's so brilliant and clever and meta, and it toed the line perfectly.

Scream is a great horror film. It was HUGE for horror films in the 90s the same way Halloween was in the 70s.

A really great film almost always contains bits of humor. It was an homage. A Tarantino style take on the horror genre. Scream was a great, game changing movie IMO.

You should have seen it when it came out. It made more sense at the time.

My favorite movie of all time. Very clever. Poked fun at the horror genre while being sort of scary itself.

Kids today probably won't get it, but it was very effective and smart for its time.

Upvote sir.

And especially the underrated part.

I also loved the fact it name dropped a ton of classic horror movies within the movie itself.

From the very first scene, it mentions Freddy Kreuger (nightmare on elm street-which Wes craven also directed) , Halloween, Friday the 13th, and the very next scene the killer mentions the excorcist.

The movie goes on and on like that.

That movie truly had me guessing and changing my vote for who the killer was the entire time. Everyone looked like a suspect at one point.

Randy was easily my favorite character. "Tell me something: did you really put her liver in the mailbox because I heard that they sound her liver in the mailbox"

"She never showed her tits til she went legits"

It took you 18 years to "finally get around" to watching Scream?

It doesn't fit in a genre.

Like Fargo it is just an absolutely perfect movie.
