There are a lot of great ones, but my two favorite are probably Waterloo Sunset and...

Better Things

Death of a Clown.

But I do find it interesting almost no one is listing songs from Lola v. Powerman and the Moneygoround. They've become more twee heroes, and their angrier stuff isn't as popular these days. Nor are their straight rockers like All Day ALl Night and You Really Got Me. I don't think there's a band whose reputation has changed more over the past decade without putting out any material than the Kinks. Arthur and Village Green are experiencing a critical revival. Which is cool. Great band.

Maybe you just weren't paying attention, but this split in appreciation of the Kinks bittersweet satire vs their three chord stompers has been going on since at least the '70s (see the essay on the band in the original Rolling Stone History of Rock & Roll).

I love those early rockers, but there were other bands, specifically in the Pacific Northwest, exploring the same territory at the time.

There is no other body of work quite like the Kinks' albums of the late '60s. Some of that survives into Lola ("This Time Tomorrow") and even Showbiz ("Sitting In My Hotel"), though eventually it would fade away in favor of the pseudo-glam of Preservation Acts 1 & 2.

Sorry but I don't trust anyone who uses the word "twee", unless it's a lisping forest ranger

I can't even follow the conversation. I just know that the first album I heard was a comp with all the stuff like Sunny Afternoon and Autumn Almanac. Liked that stuff better than the rockier stuff.

Sure, but the Kinks were traditionally seen a "lesser" British Invasion band more on par with the Hollies. Now, I think their rep is that they are on the same level as the Who, Beatles, and Stones.

Their late 60s work was a commercial failure and they actually were prevented from touring the US for about half a decade. They were seen as way too English. The Kinks have been having a slow revival my entire life, but it really has accelerated the past decade. When I was a kid, I think the first song people would think of with the Kinks was "You Really Got Me", and now I think it would almost certainly be something like Pictures of Each Other or Village Green Preservation Society. They are no longer seen as the fuzz guitar band of the early 60s but the more folk-oriented lat 60s version of the band.

They are the spiritual fathers of modern indie rock. All of those beard wearing hippies are copping from the Davies brothers. Sorry you hate the word twee.

IMHO they were more in the middle ground. I think that's still where they are, though the continuing attention for their late '60s streak probably puts them near the top level for many people.

I can't really argue against your perception that their golden age has gotten more attention in the last 10 years. Maybe it has. Perhaps it's due to the internet. Also the audience familiar with their work is getting older, and naturally will be drawn to their less raucous period.

Can this argument be expanded to:

Love -- "7 and 7 Is" vs Forever Changes

Van Morrison -- "Gloria" vs Astral Weeks

The Byrds -- "Turn Turn Turn" vs Sweetheart of the Rodeo. As great as their early folk-rock is, the flop SOTR has proven to be even more lastingly influential, still echoing to this day in alt.country.

Ok Kaf........couldn't agree more. Forever Changes, Astral Weeks & SOTR might be more wonderful and magical now then when I was a youngster and everything seemed possible.
I would also include the Zombies debut record from 1965.

No More Looking Back

Actually pretty much all of Schoolboys in Disgrace. That album was on heavy rotation my first year or two at LSU so I associate a lot of good memories with it.
