I don't even use them in Outlook. That shite is annoying.

What's annoying about it? You don't like people seeing that you've read the message, and you don't feel like responding to it.

I've never set them on my out going emails and have never clicked "message read" or whatever it says when someone sent it to me. Shits annoying

There are people at my company who set outlook to request read receipts for every. single. email. I never acknowledge them. And I only request them when it's an external email, or when it's person I don't trust to be reliable and it somehow affects my job. It's mostly a passive aggressive way to say I think you're a flake.
For iMessage, frick that. I don't want you to know when I saw your message. So yeah, hypocritical, but reliable.

I don't default them to read on Outlook. I will respond read when that person is depending on my response. It's the Internet version of certified mail.
iMessage, I turn them on. I like to know and for people to know I have seen and read their message. If I don't feel like responding right away, screw them. At least they know the message was received.

Love them for work contacts. It's good to know something has been sent, has been read, and if they are currently responding or ignoring.
Personal use sucks. I wish you could change by the person and not just on or off for all.

This right here.
I have to wonder about people who do this. If your Inbox isn't already filled with emails about stuff you need to do instead of read receipts, it's time to reevaluate your position.

Read receipts in outlook are th devil. I don't use them and don't respond to them when others use them.
I do turn it on in iMessage though. It makes messaging more more conversational IMO.
