I'm still confused about why him killing at the end was a big deal to some. He kills the exact same villain at the end of Superman 2 after he is no longer a threat.

With all its flaws, and MoS certainly had many, I still really enjoy it and have found myself watching it in bits and pieces while on cable. Plenty of it was SO right that, at least for me, makes up for what they got wrong. Not everyone agrees, obviously.
That being said, GotG was one of the best times I've ever had at the movies.

I'm trying to throw my two cents in and maybe answer the question. I'd admit I'm shocked as well at how much money Guardians has made, at least if you look back to a few years ago and say "A Guardians of the Galaxy movie will out-gross a Superman movie," you'd probably be thrown in a looney bin, even with Marvel's early successes.
I don't think many people walked out of the theater saying, "Oooo, I should tell everyone to go see Superman." That's the ONLY thing that drove Guardians to it's numbers, an unknown property takes extreme word of mouth to be successful. For MoS's lack of success, part of that comes from a movie that didn't work. It was neither fun, like Guardians, nor powerful and meaningful, like TDK. It just kind of hung around the middle of those two, which was hard for anyone to really get excited for. That's all.
I mean, other folks can give an answer...?

This is true, but if you make a serious film it has to make a point, to be meaningful, to creative a grand narrative, I think that's where MoS falls flat.

There is actually a little bit of symbolism in how MoS was seen by some. The general audience typically thinks Superman = Clark Kent=nerdy guy who doesn't get the girl, but as the audience we know the truth about ol' Clark. He's a god. We don't get how no one else around him-Lois,Perry,Lex,etc. can tell they are one and the same (I'm talking general Superman portrayals). It's kind of silly that glasses can fool them.
MoS actually sheds the "Clark" persona( not the name) to the audience and gives you Kal-El-Superman in his true form. The audience is actually fooled by the "Clark" persona. Clark didn't wear glasses until the end. He never put on that mask. Essentially Clark wasn't "Clark" to many. "Clark" would never behave like he did in the film.
As he is now integrated into the Daily Planet and his identity is at greater risk than ever-you'll probably see a little more "Clark" than in MoS.

i liked Man Of Steel better than most did (saw it atleast 2 times in the theaters) however GotG is a vastly superior movie

What's even funnier is that Guardians and Man of Steel have extremely similar arcs and themes running through them: Growing Up, Taking Responsibility, Father Issues, etc.
Guardians just puts them together in a more effective way.

It's always good to see supehero films doing so well, they've definitely come a long way. I personally loved both films, I think MOS gets a ridiculous amount of hate on here.
this makes me happy, hopefully they keep making many more xmen films. They've always been my favorite superhero stories.

Wow. I was really pumped for MoS and saw it in theaters, and was completely disappointed by it. It was pretty bad IMO.
Put me in the "I saw MoS but not GotG" camp. I'll definitely check out GotG when it comes out on DVD.

That is his opinion, which he unfortunately helped make into fact when he became one of the guys in charge. Both companies have gods and guys from the street. With a few exceptions, the humor has been drained from both companies. There was a time when Marvel fans dismissed DC for featuring humor and light heartedness in their superhero stories.
DC movies are dead-serious because of the current creators, not because of the characters.

Yeah the emo-90s-Marvel run where anti-heroes Wolverine and Punisher took center stage. Spider-man lost his humor as well. I'd agree this was one of Marvel's weakest periods.

Yeah, basically when mutants were the focus of the MU. I had a subscriptions to The Avengers,Captain AmericaSpectacular Spider-ManDaredevilThe Punisher never the biggest X Men fan and particularly loathed X-Force at the time.

I liked it at the time, because I was a teen in the mid-late 90's, but looking back, it's a lot of crap. Dark to be dark. Mean to be mean.
