I am a contract holder (unlimited data with ATT). I now have a company provided iPhone (with verizon). My mother currently has a Verizon phone (but is out of contract).

Is it possible that I can port her number to my ATT account (letting her take my place on this account) and my number to my employer's Verizon account?

Hers leaving Verizon, shouldn't be a problem as she has no contract.

good news. If I port my current # to my employer's Verizon account, wouldn't that effectively cancel my ATT account?

Yep, it does. When the port goes through it automatically cancels the ATT account. I did this when getting my new iPhone.. Called the 1-800 number for Verizon to port my number and within 15 minutes my new phone had my old number and my ATT line was canceled

I will never port my number into an employer's contract again. It was next to impossible to get it out and get a new contract set up.

That's what I was afraid of. I guess I could temporarily add a line just to bring the new # in, then switch those within the account, and port out mine.

That's where it gets tricky.

Or just punt my #...I guess

How about porting your number to Google Voice, then forward your GV account to your company provided phone? You'd probably need to do a 3 step process. Add a line to your ATT and transfer your number to the added line and transfer her number to you old line. Then transfer your old number to GV.

Not a bad idea. If I port to google voice, would I be able to make outgoing phone calls from that number?

Check out this article on using GV on iphone. There may be other apps that will give you access to GV. I know there's one called GrooveIP for android. Not sure if they have an iphone app.

GV is now integrated in Hangouts. Not sure exactly how it works on iOS, but on Android you can make/receive calls with your GV number over data with the Hangouts app. Found these 2 articles, but since I don't have an iPhone, I can't comment on how well/if it works.
