The Pelicans are giving serious consideration to Tyreke Evans starting at SF. In fact, he is now the favorite to win the job.

This makes me giddy. When he started last season, he looked fantastic. We could have one of the best starting lineups in the league if this happens.

I like it a lot. Only downfalls are shooting and size on D. But with asik and AD behind him I think he'll do ok guarding 3s.

Well who else would it have been? I thought this was the plan from the start?

Sounds like he may be back soon too.

quote:

the five-year NBA veteran said he hopes to play in at least two of New Orleans’ four remaining preseason games. The earliest he could be available is Thursday vs. Oklahoma City at the Smoothie King Center.

“I feel much better,” Evans said. “When I make a move, I don’t feel anything pulling too badly. The hamstring is tricky; some days it’s good, some days it isn’t. I’ve been doing a good job of icing it and getting my rehab in.”

...“Maybe Oklahoma City,” Evans said, when asked which game he is targeting for his preseason debut. “If not, Washington. (I want to) try to at least get two preseason games in, get my wind going and ready for opening night.

If this is the case, hopefully Monty will stop playing the bench as a unit and will stagger the starters' minutes.

It wasn't about Monty coming around with time, it was about Monty coming around with the acquisition of Asik. If we don't get Asik I think it's still a question in Monty's mind.

I think this is the most excited I've been going in to the basketball season. Please let this team stay healthy this year...

Nakia has posted an article following up that tweet that now says Tyreke is the starter. Although the quotes this is based off of seem to send some mixed signals.

quote:

The New Orleans Pelicans apparently aren't searching for a starting small forward anymore.

They are trying to find his backup.

..."Tyreke right now in my head, that's where he is going to play (at small forward)," Williams said. "Playing Tyreke at the three for 30 or 35 minutes doesn't benefit him to go down there and bang with 6 (feet) 8 or 6 (feet) 9 guys who can go down there and post him up. Conversely those guys have to guard him in transition and in pick and roll.

"Do we have a prototype three? No. But we have some guys who can play that position. And we are still trying to see who can back up Tyreke at that spot and be effective with the second unit."

Rotations will be huge for Monty. If he keeps his 5 man line shifts, it will be a long year. Need to get creative in early quarter subs for the guards a la Dirk.

Agreed. I think our roster is flexible to the point where we shouldn't have set minutes at SF. Our rotation at the three should depend on matchup. Reke can play some minutes there, Anderson can fill minutes in situations, and Miller/Salmons/Babbitt can take the rest. If Monty if flexible with his rotations I think he keeps his job.

I don't mind having a set lineup for the starting five, and Tyreke obviously wants to start. But he needs minutes playing guard as well. I think Monty knows that.

Yeah.

That last quote about finding a 3 for the second unit worries me a bit though. Nothing to do but wait and see how he handles it.
