Why can't college football time their games to three hours like the NFL?

Outside of the first down and the clock stops rule, what is the cause of the games lasting often times an extra half hour? Seems like ESPN, CBS and others would be better served having the games be more tidy.

I was in Starkville yesterday and they hated the four hour plus CBS game. It is ridiculous and zaps a lot of fun from the game.

College halftimes take too long.

It wouldn't be less football. Part of it is that college halftimes take for fricking ever.

Can commercials last forever. Also halftime is 8 minutes longer in college I think.

Cut the half times to 10 minutes; that would help. Hurt the bands.

Everything I can find says that an average NFL game is 3 hrs 12 minutes. And last year the average college game was 3 hrs 20 minutes.

A difference of 8 minutes. College half time is 8 minutes longer than the NFL.

The NFL regulates how many, what, and when commercials are played. It helps control game time. There's no governing body in college football who can do that with the networks.

Basically, for colleges, TV time and length of games = more money

Why would you want this??? The NFL is TOOOOO structured to please the networks... College football has a more natural flow to it....

The tv timeouts are longer, plus when you get back from commercial in a college game you get fluff like the "taste of the town", or Gary Daniels breaking down the touchdown play from 4 mnutes ago, etc. When I'm at the game, I see the stupid red hat guy stand on the field for what seems like forever. When I watch it on tv, I see why. The commercials aren't always longer, but the crap before and after commercials is ridiculous.

not sure if you're just stupid or what, but 3 hours is less than 4 hours. and since the actual game time is the same 60 minutes, I don't think you're getting less football

Great point. They really have made it to where watching on TV is much better than going. I hate going now.

This is CBS, not College Football per se. I've sat in sports bar when a game starts at 230 on both CBS and ABC and the ABC game is over when the CBS game is just STARTING the 4th quarter. CBS blows. I hate having the mouse control everything, but getting the SEC off CBS will help cut down these obnoxious game length's.

So, what? You've got only 12 games per year and you're complaining that they last too long. I wish they lasted longer. Extent the quarters to 20 minutes.
