Need some help finding a veterinarian, hopefully tomorrow, who does a lot of work with allergy dogs. I have a german shepherd who is chewing and licking himself to pieces. He has licked and chewed on his foot pads so much yesterday and today he can barely walk. He just lays on the floor or limps out to use bathroom cause hes in so much pain. Also has scratched, licked, and chewed stomach and hind legs so bad theres no fur and has a bunch of hotspots.
Also is there something I can give him tonight to help alleviate the itching and pain just so he can sleep and calm it down?

Dr. Hackett at Animal Vet Clinic in BR helped my dog with this when he was chewing. Gave him some pills and a soap that I had to put in the bathtub and have him stand in it. Cleared him right up.

go to your local pet store. they should have a variety of anti-itch shampoos, sprays, creams, etc. usually containing hydrocortisone

It would help if the issue is related to current grooming; however, if it's food allergy based or something else like dust mites or something else in the yard/house, it won't help too much.

Thanks but we've been down that route already. They help for a little while but that's about it. He has had allergy problems for a few years but never this bad.

German Shepherds are trashy...
Just playing. We had a dog with skin issues and we took him to doctor Bayer at the Shenandoah vet clinic.
Good luck with your pup

I take my dog to Joey Breaux in Gonzales. Very affordable also

if you decide to do benadryl, the dose is 1 to 2 mg per pound of bodyweight 3 to 4 times per day

All Pets Animal Hospital on Perkins at Bluebonnet. I live in Central and drive all the way out there to take my dog. I would recommend them to anyone with a pet.

Actually that's who we use now but he just gives steroids and antibiotics and it comes back a few weeks later. Sometimes not as bad, but this time its a lot worse. Never really clears the skin and itching issues up.

Highland Road Animal Hospital. Top notch facility and iirc, I read somewhere recently that one of the Dr's there is very good with German Shepherds.

If he needs his anal glands cleaned out Capt Panic will do it for free. Just tell him your dogs a stripper.

It's probably a food allergy if they haven't changed his diet.

Dont think its food. Feed him a really good quality food that's grain free. He's been eating acana pacifica(fish) and grasslands(duck, lamb, fish) or orijen 6 fish for years. Really think its something environmental.

Don't dismiss it.
Our lab was fine for a while and had to be switched to a different food because he developed an allergy to something in his previous diet.

As others have said, Benadryl should help until you can see a vet again. We traced my dog's problems to a new treat we had started giving him the week before. Benadryl combined with no longer giving him the treat did the trick. Hope you get it figured out.

Try food trial as recommended by your vet for 6-8 weeks. If it doesn't improve, it's not a food allergy. Food allergies only are involved with about 10% of allergic dogs. Then do blood or skin testing to determine what environmental allergies the dog has. Can then start desensitization injections or oral drops to try for a cure. Otherwise, it is just trying to control. There is a newer drug called Apoquel which is a safer alternative to steroids, but is regularly backordered right now.
