Just out of curiosity, how many have you have ever seen Oz, The Sopranos, or Generarion Kill? I understand that these are not unknown HBO shows but really want to know how many people claiming the two mentioned series are the "greatest."

The first season of Oz debuted in 1997, which I feel eclipses a majority of the new posters here.

Generation Kill was more of a mini series but had writing and subtle humor that rivals Simon. The background comments and conversations are what make the show IMO.

I still consider The Wire as one of the best composed shows of all time but just want to know how many people on this board have seen earlier HBO series. FYI, if you loved the wire, read Simon's two books that he based the show on, fricking incredible.

Purposely excluded Sopranos to keep that crowd out of the discussion.

I'm a True Detective fan and I've been wanting to watch The Wire for a while now.

The only one I haven't seen is Generation Kill but it's on my list to watch. Oz was HBO's first serious drama and deserves mention but isn't in the same category as The Wire.

As far as the writing that rivals Simon he and Ed Burns, who is credited as a writer on the majority of The Wire episodes, are credited as writers on all seven Generation Kill episodes.

Also you didn't exclude The Sopranos. But maybe should add The Corner to the list.

Seen the Sopranos. I have that show ranked 2nd behind the Wire.

This made me

You seriously don't know who created Generation Kill?

ETA: The Wire is the best 60 minutes in TV history. Of course, this is all opinion. I have True Detecfive in my top 5.

Swing and a miss.

I just finished reading Homicide and I'll agree, it's awesome. The Corner is on my read list, but I've got a few other books ahead of it right now.

As for you comments about Oz, I'm on the second season, and while it is good, I'm not sucked into it like I was with The Wire.

Ordering both books from Amazon right now. What else is on your read list if you don't mind me asking?

To keep on topic of the thread, I've only seen The Wire (I now own the complete box set), The Spopranos, and True Detective. I enjoyed all three immensely.

1. The Wire
2. Sopranos
3. TD

Oz takes a sudden nosedive in quality, but it definitely gets points for being the first serious HBO series (even predates the Sopranos). Also, the Corner was a pretty cool miniseries, which is how I'd classify Generation Kill, as it was never designed to be a long running series.

Homicide, of course, is the best network TV drama of its era and is the spiritual father to the Golden Era of TV we now live in. Great book, too.

Watching Generation Kill right now. How Simon came up with shitty Treme befuddles me. New Orleans must be a writer's hell or something

Ive seen them all and liked them all. The Wire is my favorite show, and though I really liked TD.. I didn't love it.

Oz was more entertainment in an "unbelievable" sense to me...

It's been about 20 years since I read Homicide the first time... and it's still the best book Ive ever read in that category...

**For the record, I liked Treme too

Yep, it was based on a Rolling Stone (I think) article, by the journalist tagging along... to add anymore to it would have been silly..

I wouldn't go that far, I'm just glad it was a short series or I would never have finished it
