Mine has to be the Talking Heads. All of their albums are pretty phenomenal and I believe they capture the exact sound of what 80's new wave was all about.

Close second to The Police.

Tons of other great ones out there.

Fans of the genre: who are some of your favorites and why?

I guess I don't know how to define new wave. I would not have put those bands in there.

New order were fantastic.

The Cars were just ridiculous. Incredible sound and really knew how to write great songs. I don't think they get enough love around music circles.

Tough not to love new wave.

It's kind of a catch-all for bands that came about in the late 70's and early 80's that countered the traditional 70's rock sound. It was kind of the first alternative music.

I usually think of the synthesizer dominated music of the early 80's, mostly from the UK, when I think New Wave, but technically Talking Heads would be New Wave.

The Smiths and Talking Heads are my two favorite.

I have an opportunity to meet Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads today but I don't know if I'll be able to make it.

I'd have to say them, The Pretenders, and Elvis Costello.

I always thought their keyboardist, Greg Hawkes, was vastly underrated. He really had some great synth work.

Absolutely.

Their first album kind of pioneered the new wave sound that dominated the 80's.

The CBGBs connection just doesn't let me put them there.

If the Smithereens count, they are probably my favorite "new wave" band. If we're limiting it to foreign guys with funny haircuts, maybe Squeeze.

Wore those albums out in college. Embarrassed to say that I had never even heard of Squeeze until I heard Singles. Bought it that day. Knew every song within a few days. They hold up too. I still listen to every one when they come on First Wave.

Sounds like the defensive posturing of a former Kajagoogoo fan.
