Not all the time, but if I'm in the right(or wrong) mood, many popular mid to late 80's songs do it for me. Makes me think of a close friend from that time period that is now deceased.

The Antlers' entire Hospice album

Easily the most soul-crushingly depressing album I've ever listened to

ETA: a lot of their music hits me in the feels actually

Eel's Electro-Shock Blues for me..

quote:

Electro-Shock Blues was written largely in response to frontman Mark Oliver Everett's (more commonly known as E) sister's suicide and his mother's terminal lung cancer. The title refers to the electroconvulsive therapy received by Elizabeth Everett when she was institutionalized. Many of the songs deal with their decline, his response to loss and coming to terms with suddenly becoming the only living member of his family (his father having died of a heart attack in 1982; Everett, then 19 years old, was the first to discover his body).

Good call. Wake from that album is haunting. As is Hounds from their Burst Apart album.

Unfortunately, for me, that song is Dammit by Blink-182. It's the first song I heard on the radio when I turned on my car, pulling out of the hospital after my dad died. Right on the chorus, "I guess this is growing up."

Not their intended purpose, but I can't hear the song without tearing up.

Yep, funny how certain songs heard at a specific moment in time, resonate for a long time after...

When my old man died, I happen to have been listening to a lot of Jackson Browne's "Late For The Sky"... though not specifically the same subject matter, it'll stop me in my tracks every time and then I'm useless for a bit..
