Anyone have family members who are terrible listeners?

My dad might be the worst listener I've ever seen. He just completely ignores my mom when she tells him about her work day. It's pretty damn sad. Dude is only engaged when you talk about LSU, his job, or the nice "stuff" he has. I honestly feel sorry for him. He doesn't give a shite about anyone. I don't think I've ever seen him ask a thoughtful question about anyone else.

Yes.

I often hear my wife say, "did you hear anything I just said"?

What? I wasn't listening...

My mom and I are terrible listeners. It is something I am aware of and I try and work on - she is a lost cause. She anticipates everything you are going to say, so her brain never slows down. She has to be right and loves to argue. Also, our lack of empathy makes us just not care. Like I said, working on it.

My dad responds too early if he does respond. But he is the type to start a conversation and not listen for a response. It's actually unreal. My mom is so passive. She could have nipped this in bud years ago.

I myself am admittedly a terrible listener but not on purpose. At work I have to keep a notepad on me at times in case someone gives me a situation with multiple details. I also have a horrible short term memory because when I start a conversation and get interrupted by someone mid sentence, 9 times out of 10 I will completely lose track of what I was talking about or saying. It really scares me to where I might seek help because I'm afraid it will lead to dementia and I'm only 32!

Ha, my mom. She still does not listen to why her kids don't want anything to do with her.

I hate when I'm talking to someone and I can tell they are just thinking of what they are going to say next.

My wife mentions it from time to time, but I'm not really sure what her issue is.

My wife recounts for me every conversation she had during the day, every back and forth sentence of her entire day.
I haven't said a word at the dinner table in 16 years of marriage.

Ouch. Did you not notice this while you were dating her?
