The Advocate did a whole write up on the sushi chef at Shogun, Kaz. He is one of those open secrets in New Orleans: He is the very best Sushi chef in the New Orleans area by a VERY large margin.

I've been going to him and sitting in his section for a few years now, eating omakase style and he has just gotten more and more popular. Its going to be damn near impossible to get a seat in front of him now.

Anyway, here is the write up if you are interested. Dude is insanely talented.

Shogun is the only place I eat sushi in Nola

Quite honestly better than anywhere in Chicago quality and price wise

A friend told me about Kaz and I just didn't believe him. I said Shogun? In fricking Metairie? I grew up going to Shogun and thought it was just Metairie style sushi (re: disney-fied).

But he dragged me to Kaz. I was just stunned. I've been to Nobu, I've been to Morimoto's places, etc.

I would put Kaz against anyone. The difference is he can't get the fresh stuff here that they can.

There hasn't been a year when shogun was not the best sushi restaurant in Nola

Fads came and went with rock n sake hoshinora, that place in fat city and others but they never eclipsed shogun. Sure, those who wanted to say they found the next thing claimed other restaurants as the best. Others laughed at shogun due to location and having hibachi. But never did any sushi bar in Nola come close to touching shoguns sushi bar

I just googled tigerdroppings and nola sushi looking what people have recommended here in the past. Smh that no one recommended shogun. As many recommendations for mikimoto as anywhere else lol. If there's ever been a poster child for avg grocery store quality sushi it was mikimoto. That place defines average. And lots of Recs too lol.

I haven't found a place to call my own

I sometimes go to this takeout place Lawrence fish market. It's cheap and reasonable quality. OsAka express also has good takeout sushi

Sunda pretty good but expensive
Good place near water tower closed last year but it was a hundred a head

Overall not impressed one bit by chicago sushi

Peggy brought in Kaz because her menu and food has been mediocre since Yosh left many years back.

Unfortunately so. Wish we had more for him to work with.

We've got plenty in the gulf to work with

Bluefin yellowfin snapper mackerel oysters yellowtail Bonita wahoo dolphin cobia amberjack

It's a matter of finding a fisherman to give them the high end stuff

Shogun, the great original, though argued by some New Orleanians to have been surpassed, has always been my Nawlins sushi joint.

Gotta go at weirdo hours though, the Dinner/Weekend crowds are too much.

I'm not arguing for shogun. It's ok.

Just Kaz. He's unbelievable.

While I admit I've never been to Kaz at Shogun, I haven't found better sushi than Kanno in this city. And I have been about everywhere. Looks like it may be tough getting in to try it now.
